That's a very long time!

We all know that Austin Butler truly became Elvis Presley for his role in the Elvis biopic, but do you know just how far he took the method approach?

During the making of the movie Austin was so busy with prep and filming and staying in character that he didn’t see his family for nearly three years!

Speaking to Janelle Monáe during Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Austin explained more, “During Elvis, I didn’t see my family for about three years…

“I was off in New York prepping with Baz, and then I went to Australia. I had months where I wouldn’t talk to anybody. When I did, the only thing I was ever thinking about was Elvis,” he continued.

Austin then went on to say that when he did speak to his family he was speaking in Elvis’ voice, something that he has spoken about since the movie saying it is hard to get out of the habit of the voice since he was in it for so long, which is why the Elvis twang can still sometimes be heard when he speaks.

Speaking to Elle Australia earlier this year he said, “Because I’m a shy person, and when I know that there’s bits of Elvis that I’d have to click into in order to go out on stage and be in front of a ton of people, being surrounded by his name everywhere, there’s triggers.

“You spend so much time obsessing about one thing, and it really is like muscular habits, your mouth can change. It’s pretty amazing.”

Austin was praised by critics for his performance in the film and is tipped to be nominated for an Oscar next year.
