Behind the scenes at our In Living Colour shoot, STELLAR fashion assistant Aideen Feely chatted to make-up artist Lara Ford about the Bobbi Brown products and pro techniques she used to create model Sorka’s soft, smoky beauty look. So, if you want to get it for yourself, then here’s how.

Step #1: Ace the base

Sorka’s skin is fantastic, so the mantra here, says Lara, was, “fresh and youthful. I didn’t need to use a lot of make-up,” she confirmed. “I started using Moisture Rich Foundation SPF15 in warm ivory – I didn’t use too much because she has amazing skin, so I wanted that to show through and not to look too cakey.”

Concealing was only done where it was needed, to preserve that ‘real skin’ appeal. “Under the eyes I used a small amount of Corrector in light bisque and Face Touch Up Concealer Stick in warm ivory.”

Step #2: Get cheeky

Using cream textures means make-up will retain that soft-focus glow, and give the impression of a plump, hydrated complexion – even if your skin tends towards dryness. “For the cheeks I used a cream blush Pot Rouge for lips and cheeks in Calypso Coral,” says Lara. “It’s great for people with slightly dry to normal skin, and it’s light – but gives a great dewy look.”

Her tip? “This is great for using on the eyes and lips too.”

Step #3: Eyes on the prize

It’s clear that the eyes are the biggest focus of the In Living Colour beauty look. So, what did Lara choose? “I used a Shimmer Wash eyeshadow in beige and a Sparkle eyeshadow in sunlight; these create a great golden effect. I kept it light and simple as I didn’t want to complicate it with loads of different colours.”

Liner played its part too: “I used a brown eyeshadow underneath the eyes to keep it soft, and on the upper lash line, I used Long-wear Gel Eyeliner in black ink – this makes the lashes look fuller and longer,” Lara reveals. Brows were treated to just a bit of pencil. “Sorka has great brows,” she confirms, “so I didn’t need to use a lot. I just created a nice shape, keeping them natural.”

Step #4: Finishing touches

No Kardashian Kontour here, instead, Lara finished the look with Shimmer Brick in beige, dusted onto the cheekbones and up onto the temple. “When the light hits the skin it creates a gorgeous glow,” she reveals.
