Mascara is one of those things that is personal to everyone. Some of us like volumising, others like lengthening and some even like both. But, what do you do when you can only get one or the other and you’re not willing to compromise?

Well, that is where mascara cocktailing, TikTok’s newest beauty trend comes in.

The method is pretty simple and truthfully, exactly as the name suggests: mixing a few different mascaras together like a cocktail or a mocktail, depending on your persuasion, to create a custom lash look.

So what is it?

As with most TikTok trends, mascara cocktailing isn’t anything new; MUAs and beauty gurus have been putting their own spin on their favourite formulas for decades now striving for that ultimate lash look. Depending on the vibe you want you can pair a volumising formula with a lengthening formula or a thickening one for that extra little je ne sais quoi.

The key is layering a bunch of mascaras that deliver the individual results you’re looking for together, to create your ultimate custom lash look. As with most beauty trends recently, TikTokers were the ones to christen the trend: Mascara Cocktailing, creating videos showcasing the magical effect mixing your formulas can have, even letting us in on their top mascara secrets.

The hashtag which has gained a massive 3.3 million views on TikTok, is one of the most searched beauty trends so far this year. @ahitofsarah is a New York based fashion and beauty content creator who jumped on the trend created by @katiehub.org, who had fans going wild over her combination of two Essence mascaras.

How do I do it at home?

So, you want to give it a go at home? Well, it couldn’t be easier. Grab your makeup bag and any mascaras that have different properties in them, whether that’s lengthening, thickening or volumising and get layering. It’s a great opportunity to use mascaras you’re not a particular fan of on their own. You never know, combined with another formula it could just be the perfect mix you’ve been looking for. You may have to try a few before you find the best combination for you and your lashes, but you’ll know it yourself as soon as you land on that mascara magic.
