Why Are You Still Guessing If Celebrities Are Pregnant?

Their 'bump' is none of our business.

Another day, another rumour swirling about a celebrity pregnancy. It seems as though the media’s favourite thing to discuss is whether or not a famous woman is hiding a baby bump, despite us all being well aware of the difficult nature of fertility, pregnancy, and society’s expectations surrounding motherhood. Sigh.

Most recently Kourtney Kardashian found herself under fan surveillance, as internet sleuths tried to uncover whether or not the mother of three is expecting again.

Now, Hailey Bieber has also had to hit back at media speculation that she’s got a bun in the oven. Which leads us to the pressing question of the day – can people not?

There’s a lot to unpack when it comes to the conversation around the public nature of a woman’s pregnancy, and in 2022, you’d think we’d know better than to seek out little clues that a person is expecting, such as the shape of her stomach in a photograph. And yet, that’s exactly what happened last week following the Oscars.

After a TikTok video went up of Kourtney Kardashian on the red carpet with fiancé Travis Barker, eagle eyed commenters insisted that they could see Kourt’s tummy protruding, deciding unanimously that she must be pregnant, and commenting as such on her Instagram. The KUWTK star reacted to the comments in a live video on her brand Poosh’s page, shutting down the rumours and explaining how it made her feel.

‘So many of the comments were like, ‘Are you pregnant?… I could’ve taken that offensively… but I know that I didn’t look pregnant. I know what my body looks like when I’m pregnant. I’ve been pregnant three times. It’s very feminine to have curves and I embrace my body…’

The star had shared a clip from her upcoming show where she shared that she’s been undergoing fertility treatment, and we can only imagine how stressful and frustrating it is when strangers on the internet decide to proclaim you’re pregnant – especially when you may be hoping that you are, and are faced with making public announcements that it hasn’t happened yet. All because you dared to breathe out in a video!

As for model Hailey Bieber, the star raised suspicions simply because she chose to don a flowy dress at the Grammy’s last weekend. Snapping back at probing questions in her Instagram comments, Bieber curtly responded to a fan, ‘I’m not pregnant leave me alone.’

This week’s rumours are nothing new, and we have to wonder why the media continues to jump at the chance to uncover whether a woman is pregnant, and subsequently pressure her into announcing her pregnancy.

People were outraged recently when a clip resurfaced from the Ellen show, where Ellen Degeneres cornered Mariah Carey into announcing she was pregnant, by presenting her with alcohol on stage and insisting she have a drink. Carey was clearly mortified, denying the drink, and had no choice but to share the news when she found out she had miscarried after being on the show. Have we learned nothing? Maybe it’s about time we let people share their pregnancy in their own time – and if they so choose, to not share it at all.

Kylie Jenner was onto something!
