It seems as though everyone and their mother is taking up a Pilates class and it’s clear to see why. The benefits speak for themselves. From clearing your head to toning up your body, the benefits of Pilates are endless.

What is Pilates?
If Pilates is something that you are unfamiliar with here is a quick breakdown of what it actually is. Pilates is a low-impact workout which involves exercises of controlled movements.
These target your core muscles and allow you to increase strength in these areas. This in turn improves body composition, muscle strength and flexibility. The best thing to do is incorporate it into your weekly fitness routine with a mixture of cardio and weight training as well.
How to get started
If you would like to get an understanding of the exercise before you start a class, we recommend you try out some online or YouTube Pilates classes.
This will allow you to get an idea of what Pilates is like and you might feel more comfortable starting off from the comfort of your home where you can take as much time as you need to figure things out.
Similarly, you could also do a one-on-one session with a Pilates instructor. This will be an opportunity to ask any questions you might have and allow you to perfect the basics.
You could also join a beginner’s class with people who are in the same boat as you! Remember that form is key with Pilates and the most important thing to remember is to get the moves right. So focus on precision and control, even if that means taking your time.
Types of Pilates
Once you have the basics under your belt you will likely want to join a Pilates class. There are several different types of Pilates classes that are available.
Mat Pilates is the most common and probably the most accessible for most people. You will only need a yoga mat and some weights. This type of Pilates targets the muscles of the abdomen, the lower back, hips and thighs. This is great for anyone starting out!
Reformer Pilates is typically more expensive. It is also more advanced than mat pilates. This requires a machine with springs that you perform the movements on. The machine allows for an extremely targeted workout, focusing on specific muscles at a time. This type of class requires a skilled teacher to help you learn how to use the machines correctly. This promotes core strength, posture and flexibility.
Hot Pilates is also performed on a mat however it is like being in a sauna as well. The additional heat with hot pilates provides detoxification to the body as well as a workout. Make sure to bring a towel and tones of water to class as this one definitely works up a sweat!
The benefits
After a few weeks of Pilates, you should notice a difference. Not only will you feel much stronger in and outside of class but you will also probably notice yourself toning up. Remember consistency is key here, the results will follow!
