Put down that straw and pick up yo' spoon! There’s eating, drinking and some serious ‘gram worthy opportunities to be had from going cup-free.

Teddy And Alex Smoothie Bowl

Want to know another thing you can do with your blender or bullet? Whizz up a handful of your favourite fruit and veg, and, wait for it, pour the mixture into a bowl. Not only does it look delish, by the time you scrape the last yummy spoon of smoothie into your mouth, you’ll feel like you’ve eaten an entire meal plus dessert, and have finally reached health nirvana. Smoothie bowls = the triple threat.

Sisters Teodora and Alex Coptil, founders of one of the most engaging and visually beautiful blogs, Teddy and Alex, as well as makers of some of the finest bowls in the land, tell us their tips and tricks. We <3.

Why did you decide to go spoon over straw?

The typical smoothie can get quite boring to drink every day, so we thought pouring the smoothie in to a bowl and topping it with some healthy treats such as fruits and nuts would give us a more nutritious alternative to something like an ice-cream sundae. Other great toppings are stuff like cereal and oats, which can be quite hard to incorporate into drinking smoothies.

What are the benefits of smoothie bowls?

They’re not only tasty but they’re also a great way to get loads of antioxidants and nutrients into one meal, brilliant if you’re on the go all day. They can really help to increase your daily fruit and vegetable intake too.

What accompaniments are best with bowls?

We love every kind of fruit and like to include healthy fats such as peanut or almond butter with some chia or flax seeds. All these combined create a perfectly balanced smoothie!

You punch up your smoothie bowls with protein, why?

We both follow a high protein diet and sometimes it’s hard to get all the protein we need from meat and food alone so we use protein powder regularly to do that. It also makes the smoothies taste delicious!

When those sweet cravings take over a bowl is miles better than a Mars bar.

How long does it take to make a bowl?

Around 10 minutes from start to finish, which is great when you want something tasty and filling for breakfast but you don’t have much time.

Are they best eaten at breakfast?

You can have them at any time of the day; we blitz bowls at all hours! When those sweet cravings take over a bowl is miles better than a Mars bar.

What are your favourite smoothie bowl ingredients?

Alex: I love incorporating a lot of green veggies into mine for extra vitamins.

Teddy: Every smoothie I make has to have a strawberry in it!

Should we share our smoothie bowl?

Oh yes! We always share them and there’s no shame in licking the bowl either!

Teddy and Alex’s steps to smoothie bowl-ing:

  1. Wash (and peel if needed) all your fruit and veg
  2. Blitz the ingredients together using some ice and some form of liquid. We use almond milk or coconut water, and a bit of honey for extra sweetness
  3. Pour in to a pretty bowl and sprinkle with your favourite toppings
  4. Dig in and enjoy!
