You’ll never beat the Irish!

We were absolutely delighted to learn that so much Irish talent had been nominated for so many awards at this year’s Golden Globes.

There were nine nominations overall for the Irish including best actor and best film nominations.

And they absolutely smashed it on the night.

The Banshees of Inisherin was the big winner at the Golden Globes in Beverly Hills on Tuesday night, winning Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actor for Colin Farrell and Best Screenplay for writer-director Martin McDonagh.

What an incredible night for the country!

During his speech, Colin thanked director Martin McDonagh, cast members, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon, and Jenny the Donkey.

He told Martin that he “owed him so much” and that he “changed the trajectory” of his life.

“I’ll be grateful for you until the rest of my days,” he said.

Turning to Brendan, he told him: “I love you. To co-habitant this creative space with you every day, all I wanted to do was be your equal.”

He also joked: “Barry, when you are sharing a house with an actor you are working with, a word of advice Barry.

“Don’t eat his crunchy nut cornflakes and leave him with no breakfast in the morning. You should never send a man to work on an empty belly.”

He concluded his speech with a message for “the loves of my life”, his sons James and Henry.

“I love you so much,” he said to a huge cheer from the audience.

What a well deserved win.

During Martin McDonagh’s speech he paid tribute to Brian and Colin.

“The beautiful, nuanced performances just blew me out of the water as usual,” he said.

“I love you, as you know, for your brilliance on screen, and I’ll try not to leave it another 14 years till I do the next one.”

Unfortunately Barry Keoghan and Brendan Gleeson missed out on their Supporting Actor win to Ke Huy Quan for Everything Everywhere All at Once. While Kerry Condon was beaten by Angela Bassett for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Both Colin and Martin are previous Golden Globe winners.

Colin previously won in the same category, Best Actor – Musical or Comedy, in 2009 for his performance in Martin’s In Bruges. While Martin also won in 2018 for his screenplay for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

The pre-show and ceremony are on RTÉ2 from 9:05pm tonight.
