Everything We’ve Learned About the Beatles Biopics So Far

Only a 2 year wait

The Beatles are coming to the big screen in a way they have never been seen before, with Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes behind a huge four-film cinematic experience.

Titled The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event, the project will consist of four separate biopics, with each film focusing on one member of the Fab Four.

Rather than telling the band’s story from one perspective, the films will allow audiences to follow John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr individually as they rise from unknown musicians in Liverpool to global superstardom.

The films have been made with the approval of Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, as well as the families of Lennon and Harrison, allowing the production to use the Beatles’ music and their life stories. The four films are currently scheduled to be released in cinemas in April 2028.

Taking on the enormous task of portraying the four Beatles are four major stars, with Paul Mescal playing Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr.

Mescal will step into the role of McCartney, while Dickinson will portray Lennon. Quinn, best known for his role as Eddie Munson in Stranger Things, will take on Harrison, with fellow Irish actor Keoghan portraying Starr.

The four actors have already been spotted together while filming, giving fans their first glimpses of the band in character.

The Women Behind the Beatles

The cast also includes four major actresses portraying some of the most important women in the Beatles’ personal lives.

Saoirse Ronan will play Linda McCartney, Paul’s wife who he met in 1967 while she was working as a photographer. The pair married in 1969 and remained together until Linda’s death in 1998. She later became a member of Paul’s post-Beatles band, Wings.

Anna Sawai will portray Yoko Ono, who first met John Lennon in 1966 when he visited her conceptual art exhibition in London. Lennon was still married to Cynthia Lennon at the time, before the couple divorced in 1968. He and Ono married the following year.

Aimee Lou Wood will play Pattie Boyd, who met George Harrison while working as a model on the set of A Hard Day’s Night in 1964. The pair married in 1966 and divorced in 1977, with Boyd later marrying Eric Clapton.

Finally, Mia McKenna-Bruce will portray Maureen Starkey, Ringo Starr’s first wife. The pair began dating in 1962 when Maureen was 16 and working as a hairdresser. They married in 1965, had three children and divorced in 1975. Maureen died from leukaemia in 1994.

The wider cast includes James Norton as Beatles manager Brian Epstein, Harry Lloyd as legendary producer George Martin, David Morrissey as Paul McCartney’s father Jim McCartney, Leanne Best as John Lennon’s Aunt Mimi, Bobby Schofield as road manager Neil Aspinall, Daniel Hoffman-Gill as roadie Mal Evans, Arthur Darvill as Derek Taylor, Adam Pally as manager Allen Klein, Farhan Akhtar as Ravi Shankar and Harry Lawtey as Stuart Sutcliffe. Lucy Boynton will also play Jane Asher, while Morfydd Clark has been cast as Cynthia Lennon.

Fans have already been given a major glimpse at the project after the four actors were spotted recreating one of The Beatles’ most famous images.

Footage from filming shows Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison walking across the famous zebra crossing outside Abbey Road Studios in London.

The moment recreates the iconic photograph used for the cover of the Beatles’ 1969 album Abbey Road. The original image was captured outside the studio on August 8, 1969, and has since become one of the most recognisable album covers of all time.

Now, almost six decades later, the four actors have recreated the famous walk for Mendes’ upcoming films.

Saoirse Ronan as Linda McCartney

Saoirse Ronan has also been spotted filming the project alongside fellow Irish star Paul Mescal.

The Oscar-nominated actress was seen in character as Linda McCartney while filming a scene with Mescal, who plays Paul McCartney. A young actress was also spotted alongside the pair and appeared to be playing the McCartneys’ daughter Heather.

The exact location of the filming has not been confirmed, although both Liverpool and London have been linked to the production.

The latest behind-the-scenes glimpse gives fans another look at Ronan and Mescal in their highly anticipated roles, as filming continues ahead of the four films’ planned April 2028 release.

With an all-star cast, Sam Mendes at the helm and four films giving each Beatle their own story, the ambitious project is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated music biopics in years. Now, fans will have to wait until April 2028 to see the iconic band return to the big screen.
