Barack Obama Has Opened Up About Sending His Daughter Off To College And We’re Sobbing

"I was proud that I didn't cry in front of her..."

Last month, Barack and Michelle Obama dropped their eldest daughter, Malia, off to college for the very first time and it proved to be an emotional affair.

The former US president was speaking at the Beau Biden Foundation‘s golf and tennis invitational at Delaware’s Wilmington Country Club when he said, “For those of us who have daughters, it just happens fast. I dropped off Malia at college, and I was saying to Joe and Jill that it was a little bit like open-heart surgery.” Aww!

He added that he welled up on the day and tried his best to hide it, saying, “I was proud that I did not cry in front of her. But on the way back, the Secret Service was off, looking straight ahead, pretending they weren’t hearing me as I sniffled and blew my nose. It was rough.”

Malia will be studying at Harvard, a private Ivy League university in Massachusetts, and her dad said that the painful send off was “a reminder that, at the end of our lives, whatever else we’ve accomplished, the things that we’ll remember are the joys that our children – and hopefully way later, our grandchildren – bring us.”

We’re not crying, you are.
