Big Little Lies Season 2 Is Coming – Here’s Everything We Know So Far
Spoilers for the first season, you've been warned.
We were absolutely BET into Big Little Lies when it premiered in 2017. A twisting, suspenseful story? Check. An all star cast packed with amazing women? Check.
The show followed five women – Celeste (Nicole Kidman), Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), Jane (Shailene Woodley), Renata (Laura Dern) and Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz) – as their apparently perfect lives unravel, ending in murder. And now it’s back for a second season.
But wait, isn’t the story over?
The first season concluded in a shocking showdown between the women and Perry, Celeste’s abusive husband. Jane recognises Perry as her rapist (and father of her son, Ziggy) – after he viciously attacks Celeste in front of them, the group unsuccessfully tries to fight him off until Bonnie rushes in and pushes him down the stairs, killing him. The women claim the fall was an accident, but a detective begins to suspect the opposite.
And yes, according to the original novel by Liane Moriarty, the story ends after the women agree to cover for Bonnie. But the author has written a new story that the second series is based on, and it all appears to pick up where we left off.
Will everyone be able to just move on nicely?
These women deserve a break after all they went through in the first season! But eh… no, there will be no moving on here. The tagline for the season is ‘new lies’, and it seems like the gals will be working hard to keep what happened under wraps. They townspeople are calling them the ‘Monterey Five’, which isn’t exactly promising.
According to Deadline, Bonnie will struggle with what she did to Perry, as it brings up some bad memories from her past. The arrival of her parents (not played by Zoe’s real-life mom and pops Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz, unforch) will also make things uncomfortable for her.
Renata will face some ‘challenges’ in her marriage, Jane will meet a hot new colleague, and then, of course… there’s Meryl.
What’s Meryl Streep up to?
There was much excitement last year when it was announced that only Meryl Bloody Streep had been cast in the second season in an unconfirmed role.
We now know that Meryl will cause trouble for the ladies as Perry’s mother, Mary Louise Wright. And it seems she and Madeline will come to blows – paparazzi photos from August 2018 show the Oscar winners filming a barney on the street, resulting in Reese flinging an ice cream cone at Meryl.
The teaser trailer shows her saying: “My son is dead. I want to know what happened that night.”

Will there be a third season?
Series creator David E Kelley has said he hopes to give viewers closure in season two, and says “that will probably be it”. However, Nicole Kidman appears to think otherwise, saying: “There’s no plan for it to end, specifically. This was a long shoot for us, and it was an enormous amount of work, and we’re just amazed that we can be here.”
Sounds vague enough, but for now, signs point to no.
When will it premiere?

The second season will premiere on June 9 on HBO, and like Game of Thrones, will be aired simultaneously on Sky Atlantic in the early hours of June 10. Will you stay up late to watch it? We’re certainly thinking about it…
