Demi Lovato is getting candid about her experience of a near fatal overdose in 2018.

The singer had been struggling with addiction for some time, and after her brush with death decided to opt for the ‘California sober’ way of living – a term used to describe people who still smoke weed but are off all other substances.

Now Demi is sharing how replacing Class A drugs with weed wasn’t the fix she had hoped it would be.

On The Howard Stern Show, Demi confessed that following her overdose, she had been “smoking so much weed and taking edibles, sometimes 300mg at a time.”

She acknowledged that this was the wrong approach for her sobriety, saying “smoking and drinking led me back to other substances…abstinence has been the key for me.”

“All I did was replace my addiction with something I thought was safer”, Demi added, saying she “had to learn it on [her] own”.

Looking back on that difficult period of her life, Demi reflected on how she felt a “profound sadness”.

“I was hiding in my room, not wanting to go outside because I didn’t want anyone to see me…I wasn’t experiencing life.

“I ultimately was in this walking coma, where I wasn’t feeling any pain but I also wasn’t feeling any joy.”

The Heart Attack singer also detailed some lingering issues from her overdose, including blind spots in her vision which means she doesn’t drive anymore.

However, despite the hardships, Demi is keen to remain positive and live in the present.

She told Howard, “I have to remember the importance of not living in the past and not having regrets for things.

“I try to remain positive and have a healthy perspective on what happened to me.”

We love to hear it. Well done Demi!
