Eoghan McDermott Urges Us To #bekind In The Wake Of Caroline Flack’s Death

"Just try take a step back and be a little kinder."

Eoghan McDermott was a guest on The Late Late Last night alongside many other famous faces.

The RTE 2FM radio DJ who took on the narrating role of Love lsland Australia spoke to Ryan Tubridy about the dangers of social media in the wake of Caroline Flack’s death.

Eoghan said they weren’t super close friends, but had worked together briefly in London a few years ago and then he came into the Love Island family in 2018. Here, he met her again and she talked and advised him through the journey ahead for the show.

Posted on Caroline’s insta, 6th December 2019. “In a world where you can be anything, be kind” Rest In Peace 💔

Describing the TV personality he said “she was beautifully flawed” as well as “really sparky and had this great energy but also quite openly vulnerable.”

He discussed that even before the recent drama and troubles in her life she had taken to social media to talk about the fact she was feeling low and anxious and didn’t know how to articulate it.

Eoghan also went on to say that she was “amazing at her job” and “an exceptional professional” and was at the “top of her game” when she started Love Island.

He also discussed the myth that just because you’re in the public eye, that you’re shielded from the hate, that there is “this misconception that as your level of profile rises your ability to insulate yourself from that kind of nastiness rises.”

Sadly this isn’t the case as he said Caroline would cry as people hurled abuse at her online, calling her fat and saying she sucked at her job.

When speaking about her death he said that the saddest thing is that she had such a strong support network of friends around her. She felt loved, she had people she could talk to but;

“she was pummelled and pummelled and pummelled and ridiculed so hard that it just became too much.”

Himself and Ryan left the show on a positive note with some advice, if you wouldn’t like it said to your brother, your sister or your friend then don’t say it; “just try take a step back and be a little kinder.”

Eoghan also added;  “curate your social media accounts…find stuff that makes you feel better.”

We applaud him for speaking out and encouraging others to simply #bekind.
