Greta Gerwig Surprises Fans By Defending Jo Koy’s Barbie Joke

Well, we didn't see that coming.

Greta Gerwig is a feminist – how could she not be, with films like Barbie, Ladybird and 20th Century Women under her belt?

That’s why fans are surprised by her nonchalant reaction to what was regarded as a pretty sexist joke by Golden Globes host, Jo Koy.

At the awards ceremony earlier this week, comedian Jo spoke about the Barbenheimer sensation of the year before.

Comparing the two massive box office hits to one another, Jo told the audience that Oppenheimer is “based on a 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project,” while Barbie is based “on a plastic doll with big boobies.”

While some around the room politely laughed at the joke, others remained stony faced.

Greta Gerwig took a sip from her drink, and Selena Gomez put her head in her hands.

It turns out that Greta really wasn’t all that bothered, however, as she expressed on BBC Radio 4.

When asked how she felt about Jo’s comment, Greta responded, “Well, he’s not wrong.”

Umm, what!

Greta went on to explain that she’s not too fussed because well hey, it is a woman about a doll with boobs – and what of it!

“She’s the first doll that was mass produced with breasts, so he was right on,” Greta continued.

“And you know, I think that so much of the project of the movie was unlikely because it is about a plastic doll…Barbie by her very construction has no character, no story, she’s there to be projected upon.”

Greta continued to discuss how Barbie came to be.

“The insight that Ruth Handler (Barbie creator) had when she was watching her daughter play with baby dolls, is she realised, ‘My daughter doesn’t want to pretend to be a mother. She wants to pretend to be a grown woman,’” she said.

“Barbie has been around since 1959,” Greta shared. “She’s been a villain and she’s been a hero, but it felt like in a way even though it’s so seemingly superficial that it was such a rich place to start.”
So, there you have it! No love lost between Greta and Jo, after all.
