Hair Tinsel is Back, All Thanks To Anora

It’s no surprise that we are all easily influenced when it comes to our favourite movies, TV shows and content creators.

Over the last year we were blessed with many outstanding films which caused a cut throat award season and formed many new trends.

One that stands out in particular is Sean Baker’s Academy Award winning Anora starring Mikey Madison.

Mikey’s character Ani, a young Brooklyn woman who works as a dancer in a strip club and sex worker, is known for her distinct style of long detailed nails, big boots and long, dead straight black hair. What really makes Ani stand out however, is the pieces of sparkling hair tinsel throughout her hair.

This dazzling detail was added to Ani’s costume not only for its beautiful quality but with the intention to allow Ani stand out throughout the club with the strobe lights sparkling off her hair. Ani’s look was simple enough, with her makeup and outfits not being too detailed or dramatic, so her hair tinsel really helped elevate her look in a simple, staple way.

Hair tinsel is essentially small pieces of thread that come in different metallic shades and colours. The thread is so small that it can be woven around individual strands of your natural hair.

The tinsel can be found easily from different hair and beauty brands and can be applied yourself. There are also specific hairstylists that provide the service in their salon. The majority of hair tinsels are heat resistant and will slowly come out between hair washes.

We first saw this hair trend back in the late 1990s and early 2000s throughout the Y2K era. 

It then gained huge attention worldwide when A list celebrities such as Beyoncé and Christina Aguilera were stepping out on red carpets rocking the hair tinsel look.

After Mikey’s fabulous performance in Anora the internet has been obsessed with hair tinsel. As we’re approaching festival season everyone is starting to figure out their outfits, accessories and hairstyles, so expect to see a lot of tinsel out and about.
