Halle Bailey Has Responded To The Backlash She Got For Being Cast As The Little Mermaid
"This role is something bigger than me."
Halle Bailey has spoken for the first time about the negative reaction some had when she was announced to play Ariel in The Little Mermaid.
Some internet trolls took issue with the fact that a black woman was set to play the mermaid, who is white with red hair in the cartoon.
Halle is known for being half of R&B sibling singers Halle X Chloe and says that going through this alone has been tough.
“It is definitely a little bit nerve-racking because I am the little sister,” she told Variety.
“I am so used to us always going through these challenging moments in our career together.”
However, the 19-year-old is proving to be handing it all perfectly.
“I feel like I’m dreaming and I’m just grateful and I don’t pay attention to the negativity,” she said.
“I just feel like this role is something bigger than me, and greater. It’s going to be beautiful and I’m so excited to be a part of it.”
Her response to the negativity is exactly why she’s perfectly cast as a Disney Princess.
In an industry where black people are still being under-represented, a strong, passionate and beautiful Ariel is exactly what we need to prove the trolls wrong.
And if case you needed more convincing: She has a gorge voice!

Halle will star alongside Jacob Tremblay who will play Flounder, and Awkwafina who will play Scuttle.
