How To Deal With FOMO – Once And For All
It's always worse this time of year...
It’s a Saturday night and you have decided to stay in.
You’ve spent way too much money on going out recently and you felt as though it was wise to skip drinks with the girls tonight. Next thing you know, the Instagram Stories have been posted and your heart sinks. FOMO.
Fear of missing out is something a lot of us struggle with. Especially when you feel and want to be doing absolutely everything you can. So, is there a cure for this epidemic?
Well, it’s something you will have to work on yourself and change your attitude on, but we have come up with a few tips to help you do just that.
Put the phone away
Let’s state the obvious: social media is a major cause of FOMO. It allows you to see enough to wish you were there, but not enough to make you feel like you are there.
If you know that there is an event that you can’t go to or you feel as though you are getting FOMO from other people’s daily lives, then it may be time to take a break—or at least limit your scrolling.
You can set an app limit through your settings or just log out of the app for a while. This will be a massive help in your journey to loving missing out. It’s also super important to remember that social media is the absolute highlight of an event or someone’s life.
It’s important to also imagine being there for the rest of the time, rather than just the highlight online.
Self-care
During a time when you feel like FOMO might hit you, try to prioritise self-care.
Set up a nice pamper evening at home, rather than scrolling on social media. Have an everything shower, do a face mask, your hair care routine and if you are feeling extra fancy you could paint your nails while watching some Netflix.
This is sure to help you feel less sorry for yourself and make sure you don’t fall into a rut.
Hobbies
Make a conscious effort to have fun ways of spending your free time. Whether that’s going on a hot girl walk or painting. Having hobbies that you enjoy doing will make the world of a difference.
This will allow you to focus on something in particular rather than thinking about what you are potentially missing out on.
Learning to be content on your own and filling your spare time with activities that make you happy as an individual will go a long way. Creating something or being active can be super self-fulfilling and will absolutely lift your mood.
Mindset
Remember that FOMO will only have as much of a hold on you as you let it. Living a simple lifestyle with the odd occasion or event is normal, even if social media makes it out to be weekly nights out and book clubs.
Practising gratitude, appreciating the simple things in life and romanticising the mundane parts of your day will be a huge help.
