Hoyeon Jung’s First Ever Audition Was For The Role She Landed In Squid Games

At this stage, if we’re all not humming along to the Squid Games theme tune, we’re stuck into its wreath of fan theories or Googling when (and if) we’ll get word on a second season. Why? Because it’s evident we’re all hooked and if you don’t believe me, ask Netflix who last week noted that the show made history as the biggest series launch for the streaming service. Ever.

We’re talking 111 million viewers in the first 17 days after debut, with the show trending in 90 countries including Ireland.

Pretty impressive and we can only imagine, even more impressive when you can call Squid Games your acting debut. Because for leading star Hoyeon Jung AKA Sae-byeok that’s the truth.

Speaking to Vogue, the 27-year-old admitted that after a successful modelling career, she wanted to flex her acting skills, applying for the audition and reading three parts before landing the role.

“I was just so happy that I got a role and could give a performance,” Jung told Vogue. “I still feel nervous at the thought of meeting an audience through the screen. I never dreamed that the show would become such a global sensation.”

Carving out her own path in modelling, Hoyeon Jung credits a lot of her success down to sheer persistence landing on runways and signing to major labels all by herself, within six years, she’d found representation on her own.

Continuing, Jung confessed what it was like to play such an impactful role like the one of Sae-byeok, saying:

“My favorite aspect of Sae-Byeok is her willingness to sacrifice her life for family, and that energy makes her so strong and her life worthwhile.

“As time went on, I felt that Sae-Byeok and I were becoming closer. I found joy in our synergy. The time I spent playing her was worth every second…”

Now, hoping to continue on her acting path as well as modelling, Hoyeon Jung has just been signed as the new global brand ambassador for Louis Vuitton. You love to see it.
