Celebrities and loved ones alike paid tribute to singer Christina Grimmie this weekend, after the 23-year-old was shot dead during a meet-and-greet at an Orlando nightclub.

The singer and former Disney star was a close friend of Selena Gomez, and was signed by the Gomez family aged just 14.

Selena struggled to contain her emotion during a concert in Miami on Saturday, less than 24 hours after Christina’s death.

Having cancelled her own fan greeting session, Selena dedicated a number of songs to Christina during her show, and broke down in tears on more than one occasion.

“When she was 14, we met her and my parents and I signed her,” Selena told the audience of her relationship with the former Voice finalist.

“One thing about Christina and her family is that she holds her faith so closely to her. And I think it’s not about a religion and it’s not about anything or good deeds.

“It’s just that she had faith, and I don’t really understand how this really happened, but I would like to dedicate this next song to her.”

Later in the evening she was seen mouthing the words “I’m sorry” to fans as she broke down during a rendition of Nobody.

Onlookers at The Plaza Live, where Christina was shot, said the gunman was waiting in line with other fans, and opened fire once he reached the top of the queue. The shooter, who has since been identified as 27-year-old Kevin James Loibl, then shot himself.
