‘I Had It All And I Was Broken’: Selena Gomez Got Very Honest About Fame At The AMAs

Selena Gomez has had something of a tumultuous year, having cancelled the remainder of her Revival World Tour back in August 2016 to check into rehab for anxiety issues.

The 24-year-old was diagnosed with the auto-immune disease lupus in 2014, something which she only revealed to fans last year. As well as physical symptoms, Selena noted that “anxiety, panic attacks and depression” were common side effects of the illness. Last night’s American Music Awards ceremony was the singer’s first major public appearance since leaving her rehab facility in Texas, and she was quick to speak up about what she had gone through.

Ending her break from the limelight to accept the AMA for Favourite Pop/Rock Female Artist, Selena reflected on the last time she had attended the event, shortly after her split from Justin Bieber. “In 2014, this stage was actually the first time that I was authentically 100 percent honest with you,” she said, in reference to her soulful performance of The Heart Wants What It Wants.

“I think it’s safe to say that a lot of you know a lot of my life whether I liked it or not and I had to stop. Because I had everything, and I was absolutely broken inside. And I kept it together and I swore I would never let you down, but I kept it too much together to where I let myself down.”

Selena went on to explain that she had gained some perspective on life over the last few months. “I’m not trying to get validation, nor do I need it anymore… If you are broken, you don’t have to stay broken. Whether you respect me or not, this is one thing you should know about me.”

Although the singer’s social media accounts are still active, there have been no new posts since mid-August, so it seems her re-introduction into the public eye will be a slow one.

Her last post came around the same time that she publicly blasted her ex Justin Bieber – who performed at last nght’s AMAs – for posting pictures of his new girlfriend on Instagram.

The world of celebrity is certainly a murky one, but it looks like our gal Selena finally has a handle on things.
