Miley left the beloved Disney show back in 2011 which resulted in her completely changing up her image to one that received much controversial criticism from media and fans alike. Miley’s new era saw her dressing more provocatively as well as a multitude of songs with lyrics referencing sex and drugs.

Despite the criticism Miley says she looks back on that period of her life with “fondness”.

In an Instagram post about the new song, she said: “This song is about honouring who we’ve been, loving who we are & celebrating who we will become. I feel proud when reflecting on my past and joyful when thinking about the future.”

There’s a number of little Easter eggs in the video that reference moments in her past.

Many fans spotted the Mickey Mouse t-shirt the songstress sported almost immediately. While she wanted to say goodbye to Disney back in 2011, she’s now embracing that time of her life by paying tribute to the show that launched her career.

Ahead of the song’s release, Miley recreated a viral Hannah Montana meme in an Instagram video by singing the show’s iconic transition melody.

The 30-year-old shared a teaser for the new song on August 18th. She revealed the release date for the new song is very important to her personally and professionally. August 25th 2013 was the day Wrecking Ball was released into the world.

The lyrics for Used To Be Young are a love letter to the child star’s career from her early teens through her twenties.

We can’t wait to see how Miley grows as she steps into the future.
