Yes, believe it or not, it’s been FOUR YEARS since we first got word that we’d be getting a third instalment in the epic movie franchise that is Legally Blonde.

Back in 2018, Resse Witherspoon who plays the iconic Elle Woods took to Instagram where she revealed that a new film was in the works, recreating an iconic pool float moment from the first movie and captioning it, “It’s true….. #LegallyBlonde3”.

Two years later, we then got word about who would be writing the script – the one and only Mindy Kaling along with Brooklyn Nine Nine creator, Dan Goor. Talk about a comedic dream team!!

It was also confirmed that OG producers Marc Platt and Adam Siegel would be back to produce the third film, along with Reese herself. Sure, there’s no better woman to see the job through in our opinion!

In a pre-corona world, rumour has it that production was actually meant to start back in 2020 with a Spring 2022 release, but of course, things change meaning the start date had to be pushed back.

Fast-forward another two years and we have yet another update, this time from the charming Luke Wilson, who plays Elle’s love interest, Emmett.

In a recent interview on Good Morning America, Luke revealed that he and other core cast members from the original film met over Zoom last summer to discuss all things Legally Blonde.

“Reese is such a sharp individual, I think she’s probably just waiting for the script to be right and the time to be right. It’ll be really fun to make another movie,” he said.

With the last film in the franchise having been released nearly 20 years ago, there’s understandably a lot of pressure to get the script right for the upcoming instalment, with Mindy even revealing earlier this year that the script has been challenging to write and they’re working on getting it right before moving forward.

It’s also likely that we won’t be seeing exactly the same version of Elle and Emmett that were featured in the first two films. As far as the storyline goes, it’s still all very tight-lipped but if the end of the second movie is anything to go by, which sees the pair getting married before Elle looks at the White House and winks, we could be looking at a storyline surrounding a possible presidential campaign.

One thing we do know, however, which Reese confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter, is that it will be “full of fashion. So full of awesome feminist ideas. It will be global,” and lastly, “it will have animals.”

Whatever it involves, we’re sure it’s going to be just as amazing as the original!
