Meet Javicia Leslie: The First Black Actress To Play Batwoman

Let us introduce you to Javicia Leslie, the actress who has just revealed she’ll be taking on the iconic role of Batwoman. Javicia, who has recently starred in the 2019 film Always a Bridesmaid and series God Friended Me, shared the news that she’ll be taking on the role, and shared her excitement of how much it means to her.

“I am extremely proud to be the first black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honoured to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community,” she announced.

Sharing the news on her Instagram, Javicia continued, “for all of the little black girls dreaming to be a superhero one day… it’s possible!”

Javicia will play Ryan Wilder, a new ‘likeable, messy, a little goofy and untamed’ character who will take over from Kate Kane, previously portrayed by Ruby Rose. After quitting the series in May, actress Ruby Rose also shared her excitement for Javicia, congratulating her on Instagram. “OMG!! This is amazing!! I am so glad Batwoman will be played by an amazing Black woman. I want to congratulate Javicia Leslie on taking over the bat cape. You are walking into an amazing cast and crew. I can’t wait to watch season 2 you are going to be amazing!!”

Javicia will be making her debut as Batwoman on E4 in January 2021 – we’re basically counting down the days.
