Nick Jonas Says The Media’s Obsession With His Purity Ring At 13 ‘Wouldn’t Fly’ Today

Nick Jonas and his brothers Kevin and Joe got the band back together earlier this year after six years apart.

This was an understandably exciting time for fans everywhere who followed them since they were teens.

But when we think about the fact that they were teens, it feels all kinds of wrong that there was so much focus on their abstinence.

The boys proudly wore purity rings back in 2007 which became somewhat of an obsession among some media outlets.

Joe was 17, Kevin was 19 and Nick was just 14.

Nick, now 27 and married to Priyanka Chopra admits that it gave him a good understanding of sex, but that the obsession around it was ‘very strange’ and points out that it wouldn’t go down well in 2019.

“The values behind the idea of understanding what sex is, and what it means, are incredibly important. When I have children, I’ll make sure they understand the importance of sex, and consent, and all the things that are important,” he told the Guardian.

“What’s discouraging about that chapter of our life is that at 13 or 14 my sex life was being discussed. It was very tough to digest it in real time, trying to understand what it was going to mean to me, and what I wanted my choices to be, while having the media speaking about a 13-year-old’s sex life. I don’t know if it would fly in this day and age. Very strange.”

He certainly makes a good point. It goes without saying that the details of a child’s personal life in this sense shouldn’t be discussed in the way it was for Nick at the time. Thankfully the ethics surround things like this are improving and there would be uproar if the same was talked about today.
