Over 100 Irish Restaurants Taking Part In Palestine Fundraiser

"Denying people access to food and water, is beyond comprehension"

Over 100 restaurants across the country have signed up for the One Plate for Palestine fundraiser.

Barbara Nealon of St Francis Provisions and Beverley Mathews of L’Atitude 51 came up with the idea to raise money for Palestinians.

Their goal is to raise at least €25,000 for charities working on the ground in Gaza.

They are asking the restaurants involved to donate sales revenue from their dish of €20- 30 per day for seven days, totalling approx €200-300 per participating business.

The dish that restaurants are creating should feature typical Palestinian ingredients or dishes like Olive Oil, Sumac, Olives, Dates or dishes like Labneh, Hummus or Flatbread.

One Plate for Palestine runs from July 22nd to 27th, with restaurants like Drift Wood in Sligo, Izz Cafe in Cork, Wild Thyme Restaurant in Monaghan and Little Washer in Dublin taking part.

Barbara and Beverley suggest that restaurants make the dish ‘Prátaí do Phalaistín’ (Potatoes for Palestine) “which combines Irish and Palestinian food cultures: new season Irish potatoes with Palestinian za’atar, sumac, labneh, Palestinian olive oil & olives – seasonal, simple, delicious and very symbolic.”

Sharing their campaign on social media, they said: “We’re Barbara from St Francis Provisions, Kinsale and Beverley from L’Atitude 51, Cork and we’re inviting all our friends and colleagues in the hospitality industry to join us to cook together for Palestine.

“We’ve been watching in horror at the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Palestine which worsens as each day passes, and we feel helpless. The recent events where food is being used as a weapon, denying people access to food and water, is beyond comprehension – everyone has the right to safe access to food and water.

“The many amazing efforts by people all over Ireland in solidarity with the people of Palestine have inspired us to redirect our feeling of hopelessness into something more positive: One Plate for Palestine is a campaign inviting the hospitality industry to cook a Palestinian-themed dish (July 22 – 27) to raise funds to help feed the people of Palestine and to increase awareness of their plight.

“We believe that if we all come together as one voice, we can have a significant impact in supporting Irish/Palestinian organisations on the ground who are struggling every day to get food and water to the people in Palestine. Our industry can make a difference together by using our platforms as an amplifier in solidarity and support of the people of Palestine.”
