Trending 29th June 2016 by Paula Lyne
Here’s The Twitter User Who Kicked Off The Ridiculous Notion Of #HeterosexualPrideDay
It's been trending all day.
Dublin is one of many international cities that celebrated Gay Pride Day this month, with hundreds of cities doing the same internationally each year.
The idea of an annual Gay Pride Day is something that dates back to the early 1970s, and it’s always been seen as a celebration and liberation of sexual diversity.
But one Twitter user seems to have misinterpreted the very basis of Gay Pride, by introducing a hashtag which has been trending all day, largely due in part to its complete and utter ridiculousness: #HeterosexualPrideDay.
According to the folks at The New Civil Rights Movement, the hashtag was first shared by a Twitter user who goes only by Sam. His first use of the tag was on June 15th, here, in response to a question about why straight people attend Pride parades.
For moral support. Same reason I’m encouraging gays to join the celebration on June 29th. #HeterosexualPrideDay https://t.co/xakyWupE0N

However this morning, the tag began trending, and it soon (understandably) got people very riled up indeed:
Really? #HeterosexualPrideDay What’s next, #BreathingAirDay ?

I’m putting #HeterosexualPrideDay in the box under the stairs with White History Month and Nice Guy Appreciation Week.

I always get a tear in my eye when I see the beige flag flying high on #HeterosexualPrideDay.

As for Sam, he’s spent the day defending his corner, but something tells us he’s fighting a losing battle.
More straight people support gays than the other way around. Meanwhile its plenty straights who lack self love/pride#HeterosexualPrideDay

Gays feel silenced when straights tell them they don’t need Gay Pride. But what are the gays doing now?

Time to call it quits, Sam.
