Sex Education’s Emma Mackey Discusses ‘Bittersweet’ Truth About Leaving The Show
How likely is it that the star will return for season four, if the show returns?
Emma Mackey has discussed the upsetting truth about some day having to leave Sex Education and her role as the iconic Maeve Wiley behind during a recent interview.
With season three landing on Netflix last weekend, Emma chatted about the success of the show and ultimately, how she’ll have to say goodbye to her character sooner rather than later.
Noting that she can’t play a 17-year-old forever, Emma said:
“It’s a complicated thing to me. Sex Education is so momentous as a concept, as a show, and the cast is phenomenal,” she said. “I genuinely care about them all a lot, and I made lifelong friends. We’ve kind of grown up together. But the bittersweet nature of it is that I also can’t be 17 my whole life,” she told Hunger.

Now, aged 25-years-old IRL, Emma is aware that she can’t play a teenager forever, and with other projects in the pipeline, could this be her way of saying the end is coming?
Even if that is the case, seeing Emma on our screens is far from over. The actor is set to appear in upcoming projects such as the Agatha Christie feature Death on the Nile and a film called Emily; as Victorian novelist Emily Brontë.
Emma also discussed in the interview how she’s really open to becoming a filmmaker.

“I’m very attracted and seduced by the idea of writing a film and conceiving something, being there at the conception of a story, working at it, seeing it through, and then choosing a team.”
Adding however, that she isn’t quite “ready for it yet”.
So, take from that what you will. Will Emma return as Maeve Wiley, will Sex Education renew the series for a fourth season? All is yet to be revealed, but what we do know is that you can stream the eight-episode run of season 3 on Netflix now.
