We all know Mariah Carey is basically a Christmas Queen. While we won’t be able to dance around and shout ‘All I Want For Christmas Is Youuuuuuu‘ at each other in the pubs this year, we’ll still have it blaring every day of December in our homes.

Well, Mariah has now revealed the exact reason why she loves Christmas so much, explaining that she was “a sad kid that wanted Christmas to be great.”

Speaking to Naomi Campbell on her YouTube series No Filter with Naomi, Mariah revealed that she doesn’t care if people slag her for loving Christmas so much and that her reason behind it is that she never really got the family Christmas she really wanted as a child.

“I know it’s like ‘ha ha she loves Christmas,’ no I literally do,” she explained. “I know people are like ‘you love Christmas!’ and they make fun of me, but it’s okay because I do. I actually do. It’s what I love.

“I was a sad kid that wanted Christmas to be great. I wanted a real family that cared about me. I wanted them to care and I wanted them not to ruin it and they ruined it every year,” she said.

Mariah recently opened up about her childhood in an interview with Oprah, recalling her “family of chaos,” which she detailed in her 2020 memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey.

Mariah also shared with Naomi that she felt at peace when she first learned that her Christmas hit had topped the music charts for the first time. “I was looking at the Christmas tree and I felt at peace… an incredible moment. In the midst of all the new young artists that were happening at that moment it broke through and that’s the power of the song.

“Look it had been Number 1 on the Holiday Charts for years and years and I wasn’t focused on it, but my lambs, my fans, the greatest people on earth, were so diligent about making it.”
