Everything We Know About The Thursday Murder Club Adaptation

That cast is STACKED

If you were one of the many, many people who read The Thursday Murder Club over lockdown, buckle up.

The Richard Osman novel topped the charts in 2020 upon release, sparking multiple sequels, a BBC Radio show, and now, a Netflix adaptation.

The crime novel follows the trials and tribulations of the titular Thursday Murder Club, a group of pensioners who take it upon themselves to solve the murder of a local property developer.

The book received wide acclaim and was apparently even the “fastest selling adult crime debut” in history. Impressive.

Now, Netflix are adapting the novel, and let us tell you – the cast is seriously stacked.

When was the Thursday Murder Club film announced?

Osman announced that the book’s right had been acquired by Amblin Entertainment in 2020. Amblin is the production company of none other than Stephen Spielberg – big news.

Later in 2023, the Pointless host shared that TTMC was to begin filming soon and that Netflix would be hosting the movie. Chris Columbus is set to direct.

“I’m so proud of this book, so it is a dream to see The Thursday Murder Club in such incredible hands,” he said.

“From Chris Columbus, to Amblin to Netflix, there are geniuses everywhere I look. And what a cast. I’m pinching myself.”

The official plot for the movie says: “The story follows a group of friends in a retirement home who gather to solve murders for fun, but find themselves caught in a real case.”

Who will star?

As we said above, this cast is seriously impressive. Like, really.

Helen Mirren, Sir Ben Kingsley, Pierce Brosnan, and Celia Imrie will star in the film, as well as David Tennant, Daniel Mays, Jonathan Pryce, Henry Lloyd Hughes, and Naomi Ackie. Some ensemble.

“There’s some great names and some more names coming as well,” Osman said on podcast The Rest Is Entertainment. “I think this is the greatest British cast assembled since the [Harry Potter] movies.”

When is it released?

It is not yet known when the Thursday Murder Club will be released, however filming has officially started.

This week, Osman posted a photo of Mirren’s chair on X, formally known as Twitter saying: “Oh it’s HAPPENING”.

Osman also said last year that filming would run “from [the] end of June through to September”, meaning that we’re probably looking at a 2025 release.
