Love Rats: EYNTK About The Series Everyone’s Watching
Sometimes, love is too good to be true
Love, lies and fraud – everything the Netflix series Love Rats is all about. And viewers can’t seem to get enough. Season 2 has just dropped and is just as mind-boggling as the first.
The short docu-series was first released last year with an 8-episode season. Each episode follows a new case of romance fraud.
What is romance fraud you may be wondering? This form of deception occurs when someone acts like a romantic partner to another, more often than not over the internet. They make an effort to get to know the other person and act super interested. Once a solid connection has been formed and romance is in the air, the conman manipulates the other into giving them money.
The Netflix synopsis describes it as, “Unsuspecting people discover that love is sometimes too good to be true in these shocking stories of criminals who prey on those looking for romance.”
At first, it may be easy to wonder who could fall for such schemes. However, after a few episodes of Love Rats, it will be clear to see what lengths these people will go to get what they want. Intricate and complex plans are involved in each case. With promises of a new home, weekend getaways and even marriage.
In some scenarios, people have been conned out of thousands of pounds and feeling helpless. So much is involved in each fraud that the individual is often distanced from family and friends, making them even more vulnerable.
The documentary follows the person affected by the fraud and it explains everything they went through from the love bombing to a quick turnaround in character. It shows how someone may fall for this lie.
In one episode of the new season we meet Carol, whose marriage of twenty five years broke down and she thought that she would never meet anyone again. After 9 years of being single, Carol decided to create an online dating profile where she meets Gary.
Gary was instantly charming, kind and honest with Carol, even admitting to his past time in prison. However after a long engagement and after getting Carol to sell her house. Carol realises Gary has been acting the exact same way with several other woman.
The show brings awareness to romantic fraud and sheds light on the warning signs to look out for in similar situations. It will also allow people to be extremely cautious with who they lend money to.
Make sure you dedicate a few hours of your evening when you sit down to watch Love Rats as it is definitely one to binge-watch.
