Meredith Marks On DJing, Drama and Disengaging

She's in her DJ era

You’ve probably seen the clips by now: Meredith Marks behind the decks, handing out bumps – of Meredith Marks Caviar, of course – while spinning Charli xcx’s 365 to a packed-out crowd. Yes, the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star has entered her DJ era, bringing her unique brand of glamour and chaos to the dancefloor.

This weekend, she’ll play one of her biggest crowds yet at London’s LGBTQ+ pop extravaganza Mighty Hoopla, taking over the Hayu Arena. It’s not exactly the career pivot she imagined for herself, but as Meredith tells us over Zoom (wearing a pair of oversized sunglasses), she’s long since stopped being surprised by life.

“Most of my life at this point, I never in a million years thought would have happened,” she says. “20 plus years ago, if you’d told me I would live in Utah, I would have looked at you like you were crazy. So I say never say never. Nothing surprises me anymore. I’m thrilled about it, but you know, there are no shocks in life to me anymore. It’s so filled with twists and turns. That’s what makes life fun in my view.”

And if you’re heading to one of her sets, don’t expect her to simply press play and disappear behind the booth.

“It’s more than just a DJ set. It’s a full show,” she says. “I like to have a lot of fun. I like to try to interact with the audience a bit. And I like to bring little elements from Housewives into it. So it’s a lot of fun – get ready.”

Fresh off filming season seven of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, Meredith says the upcoming season will strike a more emotional tone, especially following the tragic death of Mary Cosby’s son, Robert Jr., at the beginning of production.

“I feel great. We had a lot of fun,” she says about wrapping the season. “Obviously, as everybody knows, we started off not in an easy space with, you know, losing Robert Jr. But, you know, you’re going to see a lot of inspirational moments, I’ll tell you that for sure. Heavily inspirational.”

Of course, no season of RHOSLC would be complete without some cast clashes – and season six delivered plenty of that during the infamous trip to Greece, where Meredith found herself at odds with several of her co-stars.

“I mean, I don’t know – season four, Bermuda may have been worse,” she says. “I’m not sure which was worse. They were both really bad.

“I’ve had several years where they have been a little bit rough. In Greece, there were times where I was like, why am I here? I should just go home.”

But as viewers will know, things didn’t play out that way.

“Well, I didn’t go home,” she laughs. “I actually left Santorini and went to Crete for a month after to unwind from all of it.”

Despite the drama, Meredith insists she was never planning to walk away from the show, despite online ruuuuuuuwmerz claiming otherwise.

“It’s not how I’m wired. I’m not a quitter,” she says. “And I’m also someone that – if I commit, I see things through to the end.

“I did not write that Instagram story post [announcing that I had quit], that was fake. I don’t know who wrote it, but one was floating around. I feel like if I had not returned, it would have been like – the bullies win.”

One of the biggest talking points of last season centred around Meredith’s alleged behaviour on a flight home from Barbados, after castmates accused her of causing mayhem in the air. According to Meredith, though, things were blown wildly out of proportion.

“No, I don’t even think about it because I know the truth of what happened,” she says. “Which was, you know, I vented to Lisa. Wrong place, wrong time, but I wasn’t screaming.

“You know, Brittany was in the row in front of us with over-ear headphones on. They obviously weren’t turned on. I didn’t know that she heard me.

“But I mean, we all know what happens on aeroplanes. We see it every day on social media. If it was even an eighth of what they said it was, there would have been pretty serious consequences. And there were no consequences. Not even a flight attendant reprimanding me. Nothing was said to me. Not one thing.”

As the Real Housewives franchise celebrates its 20th anniversary, we had to know which Housewives from other cities she’d invite into the Salt Lake City chaos.

“It’s not just about the person. It’s about how they would interact with everybody else,” she says. “And realistically, there are only two women in the Housewives world that I was friends with prior to being in the housewife world. And that would be Amanda from London and Caroline from Dubai. So I would pick them because I feel there’s a different relationship when you knew them beforehand, and a little more loyalty and trust.”

Loyalty and trust also extend to her family life. Meredith’s son Brooks is back in season two of Hayu’s Next Gen NYC, and she says she had zero nerves about him stepping further into the reality TV spotlight.

“I was not nervous about it because I think it’s all about just being true to yourself,” she says. “And I felt like Brooks would be an absolute pro at that. He certainly had plenty of experiences on my show to know what he was in for.”

Meredith herself will also pop up again throughout the season – although slightly less than before due to her increasingly hectic schedule.

“I was around a lot less this year,” she says. “But you will hopefully see me, unless they cut me out of everything,” she laughs.

And while she’s currently busy travelling between Housewives filming and DJ gigs, Ireland is firmly on her list.

“Seth found out he is a big percentage Irish,” she says. “It is somewhere we wanted to go. And if I didn’t have to rush back to New York right after a DJ set at Koko on the 2nd, it would be on this trip”

“So it’s soon. It’s coming soon. I can promise you.”

Over the years, Meredith has delivered some of the most iconic lines in modern Housewives history. “YOU. CAN. LEAVE.” “Rümuuuhrs and nastiness.” But when asked which quote she personally loves the most, there’s only one answer.

“It’s always surprising when something catches on,” she says. “Like, you just don’t know, because some of the women I’m around maybe rehearse a bit, but that’s not something I do. So it’s just whatever comes out comes out.

“But I would say my favourite is ‘I’m disengaging’ because it’s the healthiest one of all. It’s a great one for us all to adopt, I think.”
