The Devil Wears Prada 2 Review: 20 Years On Runway Still Sizzles
The film hits cinemas this week
A legacy sequel? In 2026? Groundbreaking!
When I heard that The Devil Wears Prada 2 was in the works, I was apprehensive, to say the least. I mean, why mess with perfection? And as leaked paparazzi pictures appeared on social media, I felt more and more confident that this movie would be bad. Camp, perhaps? But it simply could not measure up to the sheer magic of the original.
So when I settled into the cinema this week to watch the film two decades in the making, I was, well, scared.
Could we possibly slip back into the world of Runway? Could Miranda Priestly still be so cutting in a very, very changed world? And how would they portray the ever-changing world of journalism?
Well, it turns out all my worries were for nothing. We meet Andy Sachs, now in her forties, now working at a newspaper after spending the past two decades travelling the world chasing stories. She’s living with her friend in an apartment with barely running water, ah the joys of journalism!
However, after losing her job at a serious New York paper, she is scrambling. Thankfully, Runway is in a bit of a pickle following a “lapse in judgement” regarding a fast-fashion brand being featured in the fashion bible. So they need a serious journalist for their features section, re-enter Andy Sachs.
Re-entering the world of Runway feels like slipping back into an old pair of jeans, although I don’t think Miranda Priestly would appreciate the analogy! We get to see a new side of the company as Andy is no longer Miranda’s assistant, instead we see more inner workings of the magazine, from idea meetings to advertising strategies.
Who is on the other side of the advertising meetings? Well, our very dear Emily!
When Andy, Emily and Miranda are in scenes together this is where the new film shines. They have such easy chemistry with one another. And I wish we got more of them together.
The storyline can meander at points as it fills out the hefty two-hour run time. But the fashion is so solid. The jokes land. And everyone is having the time of their lives.
The cast is stacked! It really does seem like everyone and their mother wanted to appear in this movie. And who could blame them?
Of course, Stanley Tucci returns as Nigel, and he is as iconic as ever! Never change, Nigel!
Bridgerton’s Simone Ashley takes on the role of Miranda’s new assistant, and she is, first, a brilliant addition to the cast and, second, drop-dead gorgeous. Honestly, every time she came on screen I gasped! Cast this woman in more things! She is criminally underused in the flick. And while she looks incredible in every scene I wish she was more involved in the plot.
Social media’s favourite funnyman, Caleb Hearon, is Miranda’s second assistant and is another underutilised asset. If you’ve seen him on screen before or even his social media clips, you know just how witty he is, and he really doesn’t get to show off his comedy chops, which is bizarre.
Justin Theroux has also joined the cast as a Jeff Bezos-type billionaire and Emily’s new beau. BJ Novak plays the son of CEO of the media company who knows Runway, think Kendall Roy from Temu.
But, in my opinion, the most exciting addition is Lucy Liu who stars as a kind-hearted, reclusive billionaire who wants to give away her riches. Why is Lucy Liu not everywhere? Get her on my screen more. While we’re on the topic of legacy sequels, bring back the noughties Charlie’s Angels for a third film!
Is it a perfect film? No. Are we still pretending that Anne Hathaway was not skinny in the original film? Yes! But will you still enjoy it for all it’s camp glory? Absolutely!
