Yewande Biala is presenting a new documentary all about the female orgasm.

The Irish star, who appeared on the 2019 series of Love Island, is hosting the new Channel 4 documentary focusing on female pleasure, sex, and the orgasm gap.

The documentary will see the biotechnologist visit a female-only sex club, attend a vulva-gazing workshop, and speak to various doctors and women about their experiences of pleasure and sex education in school.

Yewande told The Guardian that she had never experienced an orgasm herself – and did not know women could orgasm until she was 19 – and that encouraged her to take part in the doc.

“I hope other women who have never experienced orgasm will understand that there is no shame in it,” she said. “I hope if anyone watches, they will understand that maybe we need to improve the curriculum about sex.”

Nigerian-Irish Irish Yewande said that her Catholic upbringing triggered much shame and anxiety when it came to sex, masturbation, and pleasure.

Pointing to the Irish education system – and the education system in general – she said that more needs to be done to ensure women and girls feel comfortable talking about and experiencing sex.

She told The Guardian that one girl in her school spoke openly about masturbation…“And people did not let her live that down. So why would I ever do that and have people slag me?” she said. “I felt so sorry for her. You’d never want to say to your friends: ‘Do you masturbate?’ because if that got out, it would have been hell.

“You’re shamed if you have sex with too many people, but then how are you supposed to figure out what you like and what you don’t like if you’re not having sex?”

A study by the International Academy of Sex Research shows that 95% of heterosexual men said they usually or always orgasmed when having sex, while just 65% of heterosexual women reported the same.

It is thought that approximately one in eight women have never experienced an orgasm.

Yewande’s documentary, Secrets of the Female Orgasm, airs on Channel 4 on August 31.
