The Devil Wears Prada Sequel: All We Know So Far

That's all.

If you have been waiting patiently since 2006 to see what has become of Runway Magazine’s terrifying editor Miranda Priestly, whether or not Emily makes it to Paris, and if Andy becomes the successful journalist she always aspired to be… Well, your wait may be over.

Variety announced that the screen writer of the original film, Aline Brosch McKenna, is in talks with Disney about a sequel to the hit comedy film centred around fashion’s most feared editor-in-chief (Meryl Streep) and her two assistants Andrea Sachs and Emily Charlton (Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt).

It is reported that both Emily Blunt and Meryl Streep are set to return for the sequel. Incredible!

The original film is based on the best-selling novel of the same name written by Lauren Weisberger. Weisberger, who worked as an assistant for Fashion icon Anna Wintour, based her 2003 book on her experience in the fashion industry.

The Devil Wears Prada was a box office hit upon its release and is still a much talked about topic in pop culture today. From the extensive designer clothing collections donned by the Runway staff to the work-life balance issue that is ever so present in the lives of the characters, this noughties film constructs a very relatable narrative for viewers and has aged extremely well in the bustling world of 2024.

Work-life balance

Do we work to live or live to work? This is a common question in 2024 and was a dilemma that Priestly’s assistants faced on the regular back in the early 2000s.

Andy gets calls at all hours with the most bizarre requests, Emily’s dying with the plague but still shows up at work, and perhaps the most unrealistic of all, Hathaway’s character somehow manages to get her hands on an unpublished copy of the Harry Potter book.

With the sheer volume of work placed on the shoulders of these girls, it is no wonder Andy’s personal life was left in disarray. Andy’s hectic job leads to her (questionable) relationship crumbling and losing the integrity she once held as an aspiring journalist.

Will we see more of this in the sequel?

A toxic work culture

Although Priestly never once raises her voice at her staff, cutting comments like, “By all means move at a glacier pace. You know how that thrills me,” and the judgmental looks are enough to make anyone want to run for the hills.

The Devil Wears Prada shows how people are willing to be treated horribly to rise through the ranks. Although this kind of toxic work culture is quite not as common in today’s working world, the film sheds light on the reality of many junior employees’ experiences in such companies.

The future of Runway?

It looks like Emily has escaped the exceedingly high expectations of Miranda in the sequel.

In fact, Miranda seems to be working to help Runway survive in a world where “traditional magazine publishing” is being replaced by online alternatives. According to Puck, Priestly is “forced to go head-to-head with her former assistant, Blunt’s Emily Charlton, now a high-powered executive at a luxury group, whose advertising dollar Priestly desperately needs”.

Interesting…

What can we do while we wait for the sequel?

If you simply cannot wait for the sequel and are dying to see some more fashion industry melodrama, why not book a seat at the West End’s musical The Devil Wears Prada?

The show, starring Vanessa Williams, is taking place at London’s Dominion Theatre this October and is set to be an optical full of drama and backstabbing featuring the legendary music of Elton John.

That’s all.
