When a couple announces their engagement, the first reaction for many of us is to beg to see the big sparkler that was used to pop the question.
The same applies to celebrities sharing their engagement snaps, no sooner is the post up and we’re zooming in to see what type of cut it is. So, when a new study announced what the world’s most popular engagement ring was, you best believe we were all over that.
A study of 2,000 adults, commissioned by the Natural Diamond Council found that the world’s most popular engagement ring is Kate Middleton’s blue sapphire and diamond ring, as previously worn by her mother-in-law Princess Diana.

The iconic ring took the top spot with one-fifth of the vote. Explaining why it might be so popular among people, Lisa Levinson from the Natural Diamond Council said that it’s stand out shape and contrasting colours might have something to do with it.
“Kate Middleton’s ring is instantly recognisable with stunning white diamonds contrasting the strong blue colour of the sapphire.”
If you’ve recently watched season four of The Crown then you’ll be familiar with the scene where Diana picks out her ring from a selection of engagement designs. Picking on the ring which is a sapphire surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds, it is said to have set Charles back around £28,000.
Quadrupling in value since the mid-eighties, the ring now owned by Prince William’s wife Kate Middleton is now said to be worth a whopping £300,000. But, luckily since the ring is so popular with the public, many jewelers and retailers have recreated the ring at a fraction of the price (although still fairly price for us Joe Soaps), with the average replica coming in at around €2,000.
