There aren’t too many topics we won’t cover here at Stellar.ie. We’re happy to talk about the bigger stuff like dealing with mental illness and helping Ireland’s homeless, but we’re also ever ready to discuss the more day to day stuff too, like writing an award-worthy CV or figuring out your contraception.

One topic we’re happy to tackle? Poo. Sure, it probably isn’t the most pleasant talking point, but given you spend a grand total of 92 days of your life on the toilet, it is an important one.

That’s why we read a recent article on Women’s Health entitled Is There A Best Time Of The Day To Poop with intrigue. According to Kenneth Koch, M.D., chief, section of gastroenterology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical center, there absolutely is.

“For most people, the best time and their regular time is in the morning,” he explains to Women’s Health. Why? This is because while you are sleeping your intestine and colon are processing the food you ate the day before.

“That food tends to pass through your body once you start your morning, and most of us are running to the bathroom within 30 minutes,” he continues.

Right, so is it a biggie if you aren’t running like clockwork? Well, yes, especially if you don’t have a regular time. This can throw your whole body out of whack.

Thankfully there are ways to make things a little more regular and you can actually train yourself to go at a particular time of the day. The big determining factor? Your diet. Eating extra fibre can help as can sticking to the same daily habits. That means eating a similar diet day in day out, sticking to similar levels of caffeine and making sure you go to the toilet as soon as you feel the urge to.
