Toxic Plants & Flowers To Look Out For When Walking Your Dog

All we ever want is to make sure our pets are happy, healthy and safe and part of this includes bringing them on their daily walks.

Spring is finally here and with this new season comes a fresh new bloom. Hereโ€™s a list of ten toxic flowers and plants to look out for when walking your dog!

Azaleas

This beautiful and colourful shrub is very often found outdoors in landscape, walking trails and parks. If your dog ingests azalea they can experience a few symptoms such as vomiting, drooling, difficulty walking and possibly seizures.

Tulips

One of the worlds most favourite flowers is unfortunately not too kind to our favourite pets. Tulips when ingested by dogs can cause symptoms such as diarrhoea, drooling and mouth irritation. In more serious cases it can cause breathing difficulties and heart problems.

Morning Glory

Whatโ€™s the story? Morning Gloryโ€ฆ certain species of the flower can be poisonous to dogs. When ingested, dogs can expect symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, incoordination and more.

Hibiscus

Hibiscus Syriacus is a type of hibiscus that can be harmful to dogs when ingested. Some of the many symptoms that this beautiful plant can cause include nausea, diarrhoea and vomiting.

Lily of the valley

The birth flower of May, lily of the valley has some dangerous roots. When your dog ingests the flower, or its leaves or roots, they will experience symptoms such as vomiting, slowed heart rate, seizures and in serious cases death.

Hydrangea

This round, elegant flower is unfortunately not suitable around your dogs. When your dog ingests the flower they may experience symptoms such as gastrointestinal upset and vomiting.

Hyacinth

The smell of this small little flower may catch not only your attention but also your pups. Hyacinths when ingested in small amounts by your dog may cause symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea. In more serious cases when a large amount of the bulb is ingested it may cause heart rate and respiration issues.

Amaryllis

Amaryllis plants are a beautiful addition to any garden or walk way however, they will leave your dogs with upset stomachs. If your dog gets their paws on one of these plants they may experience symptoms of vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite and tremors.

Cyclamen

These bright, colourful plants are commonly found in gardens and outdoor flower bedding. If your pup manages to ingest this plant they may experience symptoms such as salivation, vomiting and diarrhoea. If your dog ingests a large amount it may lead to more serious symptoms such as heart rhythm abnormalities and seizures.

Foxglove

These beautiful, elongated flowers are a sight for sore eyes however, they cannot be ingested by dogs or humans. Foxglove can cause severe symptoms when a large amount has been ingested by your dog such as seizures and even death however, in most cases it will just cause stomach issues.
