Turns Out Spongebob Is Part Of The LGBTQ+ Community, Nickelodeon Has Confirmed

They announced it while celebrating pride month

It doesn’t matter how old you are, Spongebob Squarepants will always be gas and entertaining TV.

The iconic sea sponge has taught us all to be more positive and enthusiastic, even to our most grumpy neighbours.

The show has been running since 1999 and for years, some fans theorised that he was gay or part of the LGBTQ+ community in some way.

However, it was never really confirmed, until now.

Nickelodeon, the network it’s shown on, tweeted to celebrate pride month last week.

In it, they wrote: “Celebrating #Pride with the LGBTQ+ community and their allies this month and every month”

The tweet featured three images of Canadian actor Michael Cohen who is transgender and played Schwoz Schwartz in Henry Danger as well as Korra from The Legend of Korra, who is bisexual, plus one of Spongebob.

With this, ‘Spongebob is gay’ began trending on Twitter, with many LGBTQ+ people celebrating their beloved childhood icon.

It’s also likely that Spongebob is part of the ‘A’ in LGBTQIA which means asexual. This is when you are not sexually attracted to anyone.

Creator Stephen Hillenburg said in 2005 that he considered Patrick and Spongebob to be ‘almost asexual’.

Whatever Spongebob identifies as, we’re so happy to be celebrating pride for all, even cartoon characters.

Our hearts, we’re not able!
