Behind The Scenes Fashion & Beauty Goss From Our March 2016 Fashion Shoot

All the BTS goss from our March issue fashion pages. Think the DL on hair and make-up, direct from the experts. Oh, goody!

In our March shoot, styled by our fashion editor Linda Conway and shot by Lili Forberg, model Jenna from 1st Option Models took on some key transitional pieces. Yep, we’re talking the staple fashion items that can take your look from day to night and work across loads of different occasions.

For beauty, Jenna had her hair styled by Helen Kenny from Helen Kenny Session Hair, and her make-up applied by Jenny Bowden.

Here, they give us the lowdown on how to copy the look.

For the hair

STELLAR March Fashion Shoot 1

“We went for a very fresh style for this shoot’s hair look, choosing a really slick look, with Jenna’s hair neatly swept off her face,” says Helen Kenny. “To begin, I blow-dried Jenna’s hair, but not before applying GHD’s Straight & Tame cream to the body of the hair. This meant that the hair came out sleek and straight but without any limpness.

“I then tied it into a neat, high ponytail using a black nylon elastic, which I wrapped generously around the top of the ponytail. This, contrasted strongly with Jenna’s auburn locks and gave the style an edgy twist.

“I then fishtail plaited the hair halfway down and then tied again using the black elastic. To ensure a lasting hold on the style the whole shoot through, I spritzed the hair with Bumble & bumble Thickening Hairspray. This is one of my favourite products as whether your hair is thick, thin, straight or curly – it literally suits all hair types.”

For the face

“The look created today was feminine and fresh, with a pretty and youthful feel to it,” says make-up artist Jenny Bowden. “Beginning with the make-up base I used MAC’s Strobe Cream on the whole face, followed by MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation. I love this primer and foundation combo as it covers absolutely any blemishes and, for Jenna, it really enhanced her already beautiful porcelain skin.

Then to contrast this creamy shine, I went for a really rosy colour on the cheeks and lips, using MAC’s cream blush, Weekend Getaway, for both. Next I went for a beautiful peach toned highlighter, Hush by MAC. Applying it to the cheekbones, down the centre of the nose and to the corners of the eye ducts, I gave the skin a gorgeous dewy finish.

“For the eyes, I went for a simple winged liner using Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Black Cream Eyeshadow. This liner’s an absolute must-have: long-wearing and highly pigmented, it’s so easy to use and, with the right brush, can help you create almost any eyeliner look. Following the eyeliner, I coated the lashes with Make Up For Ever’s Smokey Extravagant mascara. With its beautiful tear-shaped wand, it’s great for volume and length and can also be used on the bottom lashes to create that ’60s style Twiggy-like effect.

“Finally, the brows! My go-to product for brows is always MAC’s eyebrow pencil. This is such a wonder product as its small nib gives you a really natural look, by creating tiny hair-like strokes. For Jenna I used the shade Strut which is perfect for anyone with an auburn hue to their hair. Then I covered in a coat of Anastasia Beverly Hills translucent brow gel to set the brows, keeping them in place the entire shoot through.”
