A-Ha! So This Is Why Wedding Rings Are Worn On Your Left Hand

It goes right back to the Ancient Egyptians.

Engagement ring

We’ve all come to accept that engagement and wedding rings go on the left hand, on the finger beside the baby one. But we’ve never really questioned why – until now.

So we looked into it, and apparently the Ancient Egyptians believed that a nerve in *that* finger stretched directly to the heart.

The Romans replaced the nerve idea with the ‘vena amoris’ or ‘lover’s vein’, which supposedly connected the woman’s finger to her heart. They believed that a wedding ring was a symbol of the man’s hold on his lover’s heart.

It was a sweet idea, but science has since proved it to be untrue. Still, the tradition stuck. Aren’t you glad you know now?
