Shakira On Why She Wrote About Her Split From Gerard Piqué In New Music

"I’ve had a very rough year after my separation"

Shakira has been getting brutally honest about her split from footballer Gerard Piqué through her music recently…and well, her hips don’t lie so, what did we expect? The pair split in June 2022, after 11 years together, and share two sons, Milan and Sasha.

But while most of us deal with breakups through ice cream, and girls nights, Shakira did what she does best and turned to music. Earlier this year, she released BZRP Music Session #53, and calling it a breakup anthem would be an understatement!

But opening up about her hit song, Shakira shared just how hard their breakup was. Speaking on The Tonight Show, the songstress explained: “I’ve had a very rough year after my separation, and writing this song [‘Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53’] has been so important to me.”

“It’s been a healthy way to channel my emotions.”

However, the Shewolf singer was quick to thank her fans for offering so much love and support once the song was released.

Citing why it is an important song, Shakira explained just how much people have resonated with it.

Saying: “I feel that after we put out this song, I really felt that I don’t even have fans out there. I have a sisterhood of women who have been through the same things that I have been through, who think the way I think, who feel the way I feel, who had to put up with so much crap the way I had to.”

“I did write the song for me but also I feel that it was meant for so many women out there that needed a forum and a voice to represent them in so many ways.”

Speaking to Elle in September Shakira referenced the breakdown of her relationship as, “the darkest hours of my life”, and admitted it is hard for her to talk about.

Although Shakira has been open about her struggle with the heartbreak, the singer recently shared an uplifting message with her Instagram followers heading into 2023, posting a screenshot from her notes app on Instagram she wrote, “Even if our wounds are still open in this new year, time has a surgeon’s hands.”

“Even if someone’s betrayed us, we must continue to trust others. When faced with contempt, continue to know your worth. Because there are more good people than indecent ones. More people with empathy than indifference.

“The ones who leave are fewer than the many who stay by our side. Our tears are not in vain, they water the soil our future will spring from and make us more human, so that even while suffering heartache we can continue to love.”
