The Barbie Movie Just Made A Billion Dollars – And Box Office History
Smashing gender norms – and movie records!
It’s a great day to be Greta Gerwig!
Just two weeks and three days after the Barbie movie was released on July 21st, Variety has reported that it has surpassed 1 billion dollars at the global box office.
The film took in $459 million in North America alone, and then an additional $572 million worldwide. Just – wow.

The massive earnings mean that Barbie has become the highest-grossing movie at the US box office by a female director. Go Greta Gerwig!
And there’s another broken record Greta has grabbed – she’s just become the highest-grossing female director of a live-action movie, beating Captain Marvel to the chase (which was co-directed by a woman, Anna Boden).
Where Captain Marvel made $1.13 billion, Barbie has made $1.18 billion – to date. Phew!

With the massive success of the film, and the fact that it’s made history, fans were sure that Greta would be eager to make a sequel.
However, the famous director revealed to The New York Times that she’s at “totally zero” right now, when it comes to making another film.
“At this moment, it’s all I’ve got. I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I’ll never have another idea and everything I’ve ever wanted to do, I did.

“I wouldn’t want to squash anybody else’s dream, but for me, at this moment, I’m at totally zero.”
So fair Greta. A break is well and truly deserved!
