Everything We Know So Far About The Princess Diaries 3

Shut up!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re probably aware that the Princess Diaries 3 is happening.

After getting the role because of her “princess-like” hair, the series kick-started Anne Hathaway’s acting career back in 2001. After a sequel and a further 20 years, the news broke this week that we are finally getting The Princess Diaries 3, and we could not be more excited about it!

Here is everything we know so far about the film.

In a post on Instagram, Hathaway announced that film is officially happening, with her reprising her role as Mia Thermopolis and Adele Lim being signed on as director by Disney.

Lim told The Hollywood Reporter that she was a “die-hard fan” of the original film and “beyond excited” to be part of the third iteration of the franchise.

As of for the rest of the cast this is what we know.

It’s hard to imagine The Princess Diaries with the icon Julie Andrews as Queen Clarisse but unfortunately there has been no confirmation off her return.

Before the official announcement back in April, Today had asked Andrews on her thoughts on a third film. The actress had responded: “I’d be very happy if we did do another one. But I don’t expect to”. Fingers crossed now that film has been officially announced that she is on board.

Chris Pine, who was introduced in the 2004 sequel The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement as Mia’s love interest, has also not been confirmed to return. When recently asked if he would be reprising his role as Lord Nicholas Devereaux, the Hollywood actor revealed that he didn’t “know anything” about the film.

As for the plot, nothing has been revealed either. The original Princess Diaries was inspired by a series of novels of the same name by Meg Cabot. The first film followed the plot of the book quite closely, however the sequel strayed away, making it hard to predict what writers will do.

There have been a few circulating theories online to what the plot could be – since it has been 20 years since the last Princess Diaries, a legacy film wouldn’t be too far-fetched. Perhaps we will see Mia help her own children growing up as royals, just as her grandmother Clarisse helped her.

Disney are planning to shoot the film in 2025 and there is no official release date yet. If you need us, we will snuggled up with some popcorn and be rewatching the first two films till then!
