#AskHerMore: Angela Scanlon On Her ‘Fake It To Make It’ Attitude – And Why She Takes Baths In The Dark
We are girl crushing HARD right now.
Name: Angela Scanlon
Occupation: Broadcaster, journalist and style maven
Instagram: @angelascanlon
Twitter: @angelascanlon
Snapchat: @angelascanlon
The 32-year-old says her sidestep into TV work came about “accidentally on purpose,” but given her on-camera success over the last few years, we reckon there’s nothing accidental about it. With three RTÉ series, a heap of red carpet coverage and an upcoming presenting gig on BBC’s Robot Wars alongside Dara Ó Briain, this flame-haired firehouse is here to stay.
Angela was back in Dublin earlier this month to officially launch LISTERINE’s Bring Out The Bold campaign in Ireland, encouraging consumers to go out, be bold and make the most of life.
We caught up with Angela as part of our #AskHerMore interview series, to find out what inspires her, what makes her blood boil and – most importantly – the advice she’d give her crispy-fringed younger self.
You always seem über-chilled despite being so busy. What’s your secret?
I drink Bach’s Rescue Remedy by the bucketload! I also try to fit in exercise whenever I can, and use the Headspace app for meditation, at least when I remember. If it all gets too much, I have a bath in the dark.
What advice would you give your teenage self?
“Chill out love, you’ll get there wherever there is. And even if everyone is doing it don’t hairspray your fringe until it’s crispy. Trust me!”
What’s your life’s philosophy?
Fake it ’til you make it!
When do you feel most brave?
Oddly I feel most brave when doing something that scares the living daylights out of me.
What do you consider the most pressing issue facing Irish society at the moment?
Homelessness. There are more people on the streets than ever before, the fact that so many are denied this basic human right seems incredible, embarrassing and heartbreaking.
Is there a book or album that has changed your life?
Eimear McBride’s A Girl Is A Half-Formed Thing. It reminded me of the fragility of the mind and how vital it is for us to talk openly about mental health. Thankfully people are talking out more in mainstream media but we’ve still got a long way to go.
Which person, alive or dead, has inspired you?
My granny! She had 15 children and lived until she was 93, always with lipstick on and a twinkle in her eye.
What has been the most significant moment of your life to date?
My wedding [to long-term boyfriend Roy Horgan in 2014]. Everyone talks about it being the best ever but you can’t really prepare. It was magical…
