All The Best (And Worst) Looks From The Met Gala Last Night
Buckle up, it's one hell of a ride.
Last night, literally anyone who is anyone in the worlds of fashion and entertainment descended on the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for the annual Met Gala.
This year’s theme was Camp: Notes On Fashion, based on Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay Notes on ‘Camp’ – so while the Met is usually a place for extravagance, attendees were expected to turn it up an extra notch on the pink carpet.
Who lived up to the theme, and who didn’t? Let’s have a look.
Lady Gaga in Brandon Maxwell (x4)
What did she do? That. As co-chair of the Gala, we expected Gaga to go hard, and by God she did, turning her pink carpet arrival into a strip tease spectacle. Here’s a close up of that makeup:
Amazing.
Harry Styles in Gucci
Fellow co-chair Harry Styles interpretation of the theme was a little more restrained, but it fits perfectly with his style. The earring!
Serena Williams in Versace
Serena also co-chaired the event, and gave us highlighter-green Versace with matching Nikes. Yes to style AND comfort.
Cardi B in Thom Browne
Cardi looks like a beautiful red blood cell, or perhaps placenta, and needed several men to help her navigate the pink carpet. CAMP!
Kim Kardashian in Thierry Mugler
Kim was the recipient of Mugler’s first design in 20 years, a wet-look latex creation complete with shimmering crystal droplets. It’s stunning.
Billy Porter in The Blonds
After his dazzling turn at the Oscars, everyone was waiting to see what Pose actor Billy Porter would deliver… and it was a full Ancient Egyptian fantasy, complete with hunky men bearing in on a litter. Fabulous.
Anna Wintour in Chanel
The boss rarely strays from her favourite cuts and designers, but she nodded to the theme with her feathers. Fair enough.
Katy Perry in Moschino

YEP. This is what we wanted to see. Katy Perry turned herself into an actual chandelier for our benefit, and we are grateful.
Zendaya in Tommy Hilfiger
Zendaya went full Cinderella with stylist Law Roach playing Fairy Godmother, waving a wand to light up her gown (here’s a look at how it all worked). We will say that it did evoke memories of Claire Danes’ light-up gown of a few years back, but props for execution.
Janelle Monae in Christian Siriano
As we always say, why wear one hat when you can wear four? And why wear a bra when you can put an eye over your boob? Thank you Janelle for always delivering.
Celine Dion in Oscar de la Renta
This could be one of Cher’s old Bob Mackie numbers, right? And that’s what we’re looking for. Celine admitted to E! that she originally thought the theme was literally ‘camping’, so she was delighted to discover she could wear sparkles. Classic.
Kacey Musgraves in Moschino
Tonight, Matthew, Kacey is Actual Moschino Barbie. Look at the way she’s holding the sunglasses! *faints*
Jared Leto in Gucci
Just something really subtle for Jared here. Shawn Mendes looks PERTURBED.
Jennifer Lopez in Versace
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJcAxknnB6/
Take off the wig and this is something she’s worn a hundred times before. She should have dug out her iconic green dress from the 2000 Grammy Awards! That would have been fun.
Nicki Minaj in Prabal Gurung
Again, we’ve kinda seen it. And Nicki knows camp, so it’s surprising.
Cara Delevingne in Dior
JoJo Siwa, but make it fashion! Cara is cool enough to carry it off.
Kylie and Kendall Jenner in Versace
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJSpwtHAkG/
They’d wear something like this to the supermarket on a Tuesday. Surprise us sometime, gals.
Kris Jenner in Tommy Hilfiger
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJfYahgxvL/
Not a huge fan of the jumpsuit on Mama Kris, but the ruffled overcoat and sharp blonde bob are gorgeous.
Lizzo in Marc Jacobs
A pink lady! The singer revealed on Twitter that her inspiration was Shirley MacLaine in the 1964 film What A Way To Go. We see it!
Dua Lipa in Versace
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJoQu4HcnZ/
The Priscilla Presley bouffant makes it. But this isn’t the last we’ll see of that hairstyle, unfortunately for Dua.
Ezra Miller in Burberry
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxI9_jlgreu/
This is trippy as hell and completely fabulous. The cage corset, the matching blinged-out shoes… just don’t stare too long at the makeup or you’ll start feeling dizzy.
Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton
Alicia… come on now.
Emma Stone in Louis Vuitton
We didn’t expect Emma Stone to turn up wearing a child’s inflatable dinghy, for example, but we did want a bit more than this.
Rita Ora and Kate Moss in Marc Jacobs
We can’t stop staring at Rita’s eyebrows. But they look like two evil queens discussing if they’re going to let us live or die and we respect that.
Hailey Bieber in Alexander Wang
The built-in diamante G-string makes what could have been a snooze of a dress bang on theme. Well done to you Hailey.
Kristen Stewart in Chanel
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJf-A0n-Ln/
Imagine if the outfit lived up to the Bowie-esque promise of her head? Imagine a world like that.
Ryan Murphy in Christian Siriano
We would expect nothing less of the man that his given us Glee, American Horror Story, and The Assassination of Gianni Versace.
Hailee Steinfeld in Viktor & Rolf
Someone was absolutely going to turn up in one of these gowns, and Hailee looked sweet as pie with her ringlets and ribbon.
Lupita Nyong’o in Versace
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJXo4aJe7Z/
“What colour would you like to wear, Lupita?” “All of them.” The hair and makeup (and fan accessory) take this over the top in the best way.
Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse in Salvatore Ferragamo
Cute couple! Lili’s short skirt, long train thing is very reminiscent of her gown from last year, but the Marie Antoinette styling is a nice touch.
Emily Blunt in Michael Kors
She looks like the Oscar statuette A Quiet Place so richly deserved. And that’s not a bad thing.
Lily Collins in Giambattista Valli
Another Priscilla! Somewhere in LA, Lana Del Rey has felt a disturbance in the force.
Tessa Thompson in Chanel
We never knew what a Chanel-wearing dominatrix would look like… until now. Thanks Tessa.
Sinead Burke in Gucci
There she is! Sinead Burke looking fabulous on the pink carpet. #MetGala @TheSineadBurke pic.twitter.com/9dJuyPPBB1
— Melanie May (@_melaniemay) May 6, 2019
Irish activist and British Vogue contributing editor Sinead Burke did us proud in this gown. She just keeps rising and rising, and it’s fully deserved.
Joan Collins in Valentino
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJJ7BqhPi7/
On theme? Joan Collins IS the theme, bitch.
Bette Midler and her daughter Sophie Von Haselberg in Michael Kors
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJaudjAuIC/
Likewise.
Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner in Louis Vuitton
The newlyweds went matchy-matchy! Pity Joe didn’t get involved with Sophie’s glitter hair mascara.
Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas in Dior
Game of Thrones fans are comparing them to an alternate-universe Missandei and Littlefinger, something Nick has acknowledged. Good on them for stepping out of their box, though.
Karlie Kloss in Gucci
Karlie. KARLIE. This is not a cocktail party, it is the Met. We need more.
Hamish Bowles in Maison Martin Margiela
Many attendees could take a leaf from Vogue editor Hamish Bowles’ book. No holding back!
Dakota Johnson in Gucci
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJow3kH8AX/
This is pretty on Dakota, and the beadwork is stunning.
Lucy Boynton in Prada
Our fave girl from the past awards season transformed into a woodland nymph for the occasion, with dyed blue hair and floral headpiece.
Natasha Lyonne in Jean Paul Gaultier
She’s giving you Klaus Nomi, with a bag filled with cigarettes (seriously). Love it.
Michael Urie in Christian Siriano
This is perfect for the theme. Marc St James would never do us wrong.
Darren Criss in Balmain
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxI5Sntl9IS/
Teach the lads how to do it, Darren!
Aquaria in Maison Martin Margiela
Not what we’d expect from the Drag Race alum, but then again, do we ever know what to expect from Aquaria?
Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJ-ugyBQFG/
Honestly did not expect Benny C to go for it, of all people, but he did. He bloody DID.
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth in Saint Laurent
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJ2DwMh8HD/
Miley! You’re a former Disney star! Your godmother is Dolly Parton! It’s hard to believe she took all that and came up with this absolute yawn. And Liam, to quote Michelle Visage, you’re resting on pretty.
Gigi Hadid in Michael Kors
This is really cool, and the white eye makeup ties it all together. Gigi, you’re safe.
Bella Hadid in Moschino
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJH-ZFh0J3/
But it’s business as usual for Bella, who is mostly concerned with showing off her hip bones. The short hair and opera gloves are excellent, however.
Laverne Cox in Christian Siriano
*showing up to your funeral like*
Saoirse Ronan in Gucci
https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJAAqKHB4p/
Here we’re going to see a great Gucci on our darling Saoirse Ronan, who looks ornate and beautiful and kinda Game of Thronesian.
Ashley Graham in Gucci
And here we’re going to see a confusing Gucci on Ashley Graham, who looks like she forgot her skirt. Sorry to end on such a bum note, but still.
