Sometimes basic is best. And in terms of design elements, you can’t get more basic than a flip flop. The epitome of “clean lines”, the flip-flop champions the bare necessities of functioning footwear: a sole, and something to keep that sole attached to your foot. Simplicity at its finest.

A mainstay of the 90s and early Y2K, in past years, flip-flops have fallen out of favour somewhat. But as Scandi-inspired elevated basics continue to dominate the trend cycle, it looks like the humble flip-flop is having a resurgence.

Channelling that 90s minimalist aesthetic, the simplicity of the classic thong design has made flip-flops the standout silhouette of the summer.

Once reserved for the pool-side or beach bar, this time, flip-flops have been re-invented as a streetwear staple. The cool kids have been wearing theirs with everything from baggy cargo pants to slip dresses, and the barely-there design means that they go with basically everything.

In terms of colours, it’s hard to go wrong. Keep things simple with a black or neutral pair, á la J-Lo on her Parisienne honeymoon, or add a pop of colour with a bright hue (Matilda Djerf has been sporting a cute yellow pair as of late).

Versatile comfortable, and affordable, flip-flops make a great basic addition to your wardrobe… perfect for heatwave weather.
