Lady Gaga just revealed a sneak peek of her role in Joker: Folie à Deux on Instagram. The pop star shared with fans a picture of her as Harley Quinn alongside her co-star Joaquin Phoenix who is set to play the Joker in the highly anticipated sequel.

Director Todd Phillips posted the same image to his Instagram, captioned, “Happy Valentine’s Day.” Phillips announced Gaga’s involvement in the film last August but until now it had not been officially confirmed that Gaga would be playing Harley Quinn. In the picture, Gaga is captured holding Phoenix’s face, which is painted in the classic clown makeup synonymous with the Joker. The two are seen locking eyes as Gaga expresses a look of terror.

According to Miriam-Webster.com the French term, ‘Folie a Deux’ refers to “the presence of the same or similar delusional ideas in two persons closely associated with one another.” The upcoming movie is set to show the backstory behind the Joker and Harley’s twisted relationship.

The 2019 movie Joker was an outstanding success which accumulated over $1 billion in global box office earnings, making it the highest-grossing R-rated film in history.

Fans can expect the movie to premiere on October 4th 2024 and the star-studded cast includes Cathrine Keener, Zazie Beetz and our very own Brendan Gleeson.

Margot Robbie, who played Harley Quinn in the “Suicide Squad” films, is supportive of Lady Gaga taking on the role and shared her thoughts with MTV in October 2022 saying, “I think she’ll do something incredible with it. It’s such an honour to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing.”

Gaga has already made her mark in the film industry having starred in the award-winning “A star is born” where she made history as the first person to win best actress and best original song in the same year.

The Joker sequel is rumoured to also have musical elements incorporated into it, which is a stark contrast from Phillip’s previous gritty films, but we’re here for it!
