Desperate To Get Rid Of Split Ends? Here’s How
Hair care 101.
Are split ends ruining your vision of gorgeous, long locks? Yep, we feel you. They constantly get in the way of achieving healthy hair, and when you’re actually trying to grow your hair, well they can kind of ruin everything. But what actually causes them? Well, a whole host of things, in fact. Brushing excessively, towel drying your hair too roughly, colouring, chemical treatments, and of course, heat styling in the form of hair straighteners, curlers, and hair dryers.
Of course, one way to get rid of them is by treating yourself to a regular trim, but there are other ways too. Get ready to have hair worthy of a shampoo ad. Here’s how to get rid of split ends, stat.
Rethink towel drying
Your hair is particularly vulnerable when it’s wet (check out why that is here) so even how you towel dry it can make a massive difference. We’re all guilty of this, but don’t rub your hair dry with the towel, it will only cause friction and therefore more breakage. Instead, try squeezing any excess water from your hair with a towel. This is a lot more gentle on your hair, leading to less split ends.
Quick blow-dries
You may think that blow-drying your hair layer by layer will result in perfectly tamed locks. But instead, it’s your one-way ticket to split ends-ville. Instead, blast your hairdryer all over until it’s 80% dry (way quicker than going through each layer too). Then, blow-dry each layer after.
Give it some TLC
If you have plenty of split ends, a heat protection product alone just won’t cut it (although you should really be using one). What you need to do is pack some hydration into your hair. Hair with split ends is usually dry, and craves moisture. So give it a little love with hydrating shampoo and conditioner, as well as a lovely hydrating hair treatment at least once a week. Think of it as your Sunday self-care, and you’ll be well on your way to a split end free life.
Change up your pillowcase
Things are about to get real boujie – invest in a silk pillowcase. The benefits they have for your hair are almost endless. When you toss and turn during the night, you’d be surprised at the amount of friction your hair goes through. Having a silk pillowcase will ease a lot of that, plus your hair won’t look as crazy as usual when you wake up each morning.
Get the chop
Okay, we have to say it. The last resort is to simply chop off those split ends and start your hair fresh. It really depends how bad your split ends are if you do need to get the chop. If they’re not that bad, you can get away with it. But if you’re doing all the above and getting nowhere? Well, then it’s time, my friend.
