As you get older you may start to notice that your hair is getting slightly thinner and your scalp a little drier. Hair loss can leave you feeling hopeless; as though there’s nothing you can do to stop it. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth! In fact, sometimes a little head rub is all you need to boost your scalp health.

Enter, hair oiling and scalp massaging.

This viral hair care combination has been proven to improve hair length and thickness!

A bonus is that it takes almost no effort and is super relaxing, ideal for adding to your self care routine.

Hair oiling is the process of applying oil to the hair from its roots to its tips and distributing the product evenly across your head by massaging it into the scalp.

What Are The Benefits of Hair Oiling And Scalp Massaging?

In a study conducted in Tokyo, researchers found that hair thickness had a significant increase after 24 weeks of initiating scalp massaging. There are two potential reasons for this. The first is that it increases blood flow to the scalp which results in encouraged hair growth. The second and more specific explanation was that it directly stimulated the hair’s dermal papilla cells which are vital for hair formation.

With the proven benefits of scalp massaging, and the added antioxidants, fatty acids, and vitamins in nourishing hair oils, your hair is bound for success.

Which Oil Do We Recommend?

Of course, most oils have a variety of benefits, so you can use whichever suits your specific hair type. Still, we have some all-time faves.

Coconut oil – With its fatty and lauric acids, and its ability to prevent protein loss, coconut oil is our most popular choice.

Argan oil – AKA Moroccan oil is enriched with vitamins A, C and E, omega 3, and antioxidants which are essential for hair strength and shine.

Rosemary oil – This is the latest trend when it comes to hair care. Rosemary oil has the ability to promote circulation which consequently supplies our dermal papilla cells and hair follicles with the blood and oxygen supply they need.

1. Comb through and detangle your hair.

2. Apply the oil of choice to hair from its roots to its tips.

3. Using your fingertips, softly massage the oil into your scalp. The longer you take on this step, the better!

4. Pin your hair up and away from your face and leave it to sit for a couple of hours or if you really want to let it marinate then, overnight.

5. Shampoo twice, and make sure to rinse thoroughly.

6. Now you are free to continue your hair wash routine as normal.

One TikTok user Isabella Kate uses a slightly different massaging technique with an actual Scalp Massager. It’s basically a brush with large, rubber bristles that allows you to apply gentle but direct pressure to your hair follicles.

How Often Should You Oil And Massage Your Scalp?

According to Doctor Varalakshmi Yanamandra, you should oil your hair a minimum of twice a week, preferably before you plan to wash it. By incorporating it into your hair wash routine you can guarantee consistency and positive results.

Good circulation ensures that all our organs and body parts receive the blood and oxygen needed for their adequate function. Why should the scalp be any different?

Hair loss is your scalp’s way of telling you that it is in dire need of a massage! So, get that blood pumping and those locks growing.
