This kind of beauty takes a whole lot of time.

It’s been a hot minute since we watched J. Lo and Shakira’s Superbowl performance on Monday morning, and we’re still not fully over it. But now after we’ve watched the halftime show, admittedly more than once, we want to know the details of how they looked SO good. So we were only delighted when Scott Barnes, J. Lo’s long time makeup artist, spilled the beans.

Obviously, something like this takes more than just a couple of hours in makeup, according to Refinery 29, she was just as committed to her glam routine as she was the choreography. “We’ve been talking about this for a couple of months, and we did dress rehearsals for her look as well. We kept tweaking it and making it better.”

Talking about the actual performance itself, Scott says it’s pretty nerve wracking for him too. “It’s a nail biter for me through the whole thing,” he says. “What if she has a malfunction? What if an eyelash flies off?”

According to Elle, the day long prep is a serious matter. Scott let Elle in on some further details about the iconic show and routine. “We don’t have music pumping or anything,” he said after the performance. “We all want to be laser-sharp, so everyone is very concentrated.” Scott said that the day started at 10am, with everything from nails to hair and makeup to rehearsals going on. “I left the house around 3 p.m. with a police escort. Yeah, a police escort.” Then, makeup started up again around 4:30pm.

Scott continued, speaking to Elle, “that was the most jam-packed performance I think we’ve ever done. I’ve known Jennifer for 20 years and this was like a career flex in front of our eyes for six and a half minutes. I was so proud of the whole performance. I loved it all.”

According to Scott, some of the standout products he used were the Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Gel Eye Crayon in Blacquer, Marc Jacobs Beauty O!Mega Bronzer Perfect Tan in Tantric and Scott Barnes Snatural Eyeshadow Palette. So, we’re basically going to run out and get those. Right. Now.
