Why are these home comforts on the rise?

Think about the last time you had a beauty treatment. Maybe you got your gel nails refilled or finally used that voucher you got for your birthday and treated yourself to a massage. If you thought to yourself ‘wouldn’t it be great if I could do this without leaving my sofa?’, you’re not alone.

As busy women, fitting in beauty treatments can be an afterthought, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be that way. It’s 2023 and if you want to get your nails done from the comfort of your own sitting room, you can. Order-in beauty treatments are rising in popularity around the country, and for good reason.

“There has been a noticeable increase in Irish women opting for at-home beauty services over the past few years,” says Carmel from My Salon, a mobile beauty service. Carmel says that a number of factors are at play which has resulted in booming business for her.

“Women are seeking ways to incorporate self-care into their busy lives, and at-home beauty services provide them with the opportunity to receive professional treatments in the comfort of their own space.” For some, receiving a tailor-made service is one of the alluring reasons for at-home beauty treatments, but for others, it’s a necessity.

“At My Salon, our clients can book services to be done in their own homes, hotel rooms, hospital rooms, or anywhere else. At-home treatments cater to those with mobility or medical issues, meaning everyone can still enjoy beauty services without the usual challenges of going to a salon.”

Paula, who is high-risk following the pandemic says that her beauty habits have changed drastically since the pandemic. Unable to attend salons because of her health, Paula switched to getting beauty treatments at home and hasn’t looked back since. “Getting treatments at home means I can feel and look like myself just like I did before covid, without the added risk that going to a salon has,” she says.

“I have a lovely woman who comes to my house once a month to do my nails, my hairdresser does my hair in my kitchen, and sometimes if I want something extra special I might order a massage. Because I’m high-risk, a trip to a busy salon with so many different people around would make me really anxious. I would have to wear a double mask and constantly sanitise, the stress would stop me from enjoying the treatment. Now, having my treatments at home means I’m completely relaxed and can enjoy chatting with my nail technician or hairdresser.”

For Paula, ordering in beauty treatments gives her a sense of normality, “Just because I’m high-risk doesn’t mean I have to miss out on having my nails done or nice hair.” There are many different reasons why people bring the salon to them, Carmel says that for most people, convenience is a significant benefit.

“With at-home services, there’s greater flexibility in scheduling, making it easier for women to fit self-care into their routines. Moreover, many women find that the familiarity of one’s own space contributes to the enjoyment of the service.”

At a time when almost anything is just a few taps on a phone screen away, ordering a massage to your front room is more than just a fad, it’s a new way of self-care for the modern, busy, beauty fan.
